Caris.° Illica.

Dearest Illica,

I did not answer you right away because I’ve been busy with Franchetti putting the 1st Act into shape, so that now the music, text, and action all work well together. Once I’ve gone through the libretto separately I’ll have it typeset, and that way you can make your corrections more easily and rapidly on the page proofs.

As you requested, I’m sending you the 3rd act – but in any case your proposal to simply write in some performance indications for the Chorus will not do!!... they are not simple exclamations but musical phrases that follow the orchestra and absolutely need words. In this act there’s also the Stapps episode!!... but by adjusting some of the words, it’s possible to avoid the danger of a veto from the censors and the public’s distaste. For that matter, if it were not the American President, even before that there would have been Umberto, and Carnot, and Elisabeth!!!...

We also have to establish various dates and the relative ages of the characters in order not to leave ourselves open to criticism.

In sum, there are many, many things to do, which are difficult to manage in your absence.

However.... publisher and poet would do well to note that Franchetti is fully in compliance with the dates of consignment. With this 3rd act he can now formally declare: “Here it is, it’s ready, I only need a few lines of verse for the Chorus!!” – and these few lines...... are not forthcoming. We should beware of the responsibility we may be forced to assume!

As for Mascagni, I confirm that I am here waiting for your proposals; and I would like to see the libretto completely finished right away, so that I could be done with so much useless, damaging, and offensive badgering. But I am neither poet, nor opera composer, nor dramaturge, nor librettist!... I am only a simple cook.... but without any meat, any sauces, without any ingredients or spices, no fire... I can’t do anything but twiddle my thumbs and hope for the best!!...

In the meantime..... have you seen the 1st Act of Butterfly?...... psst..... psst..... eh, right.... I’ve seen nothing whatsoever, except for the first few pages!!!....

Dear Illica.... since you’ve told me to set a deadline for the other 2 acts of Butterfly, I say: okay then, for the end of October – earlier would be even better.... but in the end, once you’re done with the libretto, I hope I’ll have a better perspective of this situation, which for now – and certainly through no fault of ours –  has the appearance of a perfectly ridiculous comedy.

Oh!... how this is a pain in the......... and at my age, this is not good!!!!.....

So: return the 3rd act of Germania right away with the relative lines for the chorus; then with a quick visit from you here we’ll go over the Stapps scene, rendering it poignant only by virtue of his paternal grief and removing any political overtones. As long as even this way they let it pass!!... but Austria and Germany will flat out say no. My most cordial greetings, and give my best to your wife.

Yours warmly,

Giulio Ricordi
