Hon. Avv. Carlo Panattoni

Milan

Hon. Avv. and dear friend,

Because I was unable to respond the same day to your letter, which I received too late in the day on the 3rd of this month, I am doing so now with my apologies for a delay for which I was not responsible. With regard to your request, I would like to respond yes, were it even barely within my power to do so: I would like to respond yes because it is pleasing to be able to agree to a question from a person for whom one has such high regard and cordial friendship; I would like to respond yes, because (I hope you are not surprised by my habitually straightforward manner) as things stand now it would be my emphatic wish and entirely to my benefit to immediately give you proof of how much I appreciate the work and study you so zealously undertake in our behalf. But there is one qualifying factor: and that is that, while my position as General Manager allows me a fair degree of latitude and trust, this only regards the ordinary and everyday music business; for anything beyond that not only do I lack any authority, but I am even expressly prohibited from taking such initiative. I would therefore find it impossible to act. But there is more: were that impossibility not to exist, I would still be prevented from satisfying your request for what would be a matter of Disbursement. Our Company has only enough capital to cover the needs of ordinary administration and ordinary business affairs; it has none of those famous so-called roulantes [rollover sums] that lead to ruin by growing from a single pebble to an avalanche. Our Company is modestly constructed on a solid foundation, without aiming for enormous profits and amazing dividends; this means that if the amount of 10,000 lire might seem small in terms of our capital, it becomes unapproachable when understood in terms of our Company’s fundamental nature. Therefore, my dear Avvocato, you must now understand how and why it is impossible for me to fulfill your request; but on the other hand, I would be more than happy (I say this in all honesty) to give you proof of my friendship, and if an advance, a modest subsidy within what means I have available could be useful, it would give me the greatest pleasure to be here at your service.

Our Sig. Tornaghi , who oversees Disbursements and knows what financial and business commitments the company has, can look into just how and to what degree the proposition is feasible. It would therefore be good if you were to apprise him of this letter, and meanwhile I extend my cordial salutations, always with the highest regard.

Yours most sincerely,

(signed) Giulio Ricordi
