Ricevo la stimata sua 6 corre. Ho telegrafato stamane al Sr Tornaghi perché veda cogli impegni di cassa come ed in quale misura può far fronte alla di Lei richiesta. Credo poi affatto inutile assicurarla con quanta soddisfazione io vorrei pure accontentarla: ma devo altresì tenere conto e de’ miei impegni e de’ miei obblighi e conciliare ogni cosa. Di più siamo nel 1° anno di esercizio sociale, sul quale gravano spese straordinarie, ingenti, alle quali ho dovuto provvedere: in altre circostanze sarei stato più libero, ed avrei certo potuto meglio accontentarla. Ella è troppo pratico di affari per non sapere che cosa voglia dire: 1° anno di esercizio! 

E poiché di ciò parliamo, debbo pregarla ancora e vivamente di regolarizzare i suoi conti colla nostra Amministrazione: se le somme anticipatele saranno maggiori di quelle spettantegli per le di Lei prestazioni, ciò poco importa: non sarà affatto un incaglio per Lei; ma certo si è che questa impossibilità di regolare la di Lei partita mi mette in serio imbarazzo…. e per causa sua faccio la figura di un cattivo amministratore. Veda dunque di presentare la nota: se vi sarà credito nostro non vi pensi: e comunque sia in breve sarà pareggiato, visto gli importanti affari che ora Ella sta trattando.

Sarà forse bene cominciare col far comporre quanto ha in pronto: faccia per ciò chiamare il compositore Brambilla , al quale darà ordine che le prove sieno date a nessuno, e sieno tirate e corrette da lui e Galli , chiudendo la composizione.

Io sarò a Milano posdomani sera, Martedì, per ripartire Giovedì. Il mio braccio va assai meglio, ma non sono ancora completamente guarito, e la notte specialmente i dolori bussano alla spalla!!.. La ringrazio della di Lei premura.

   I received your letter of the 6th of this month. Today I telegraphed Sig. Tornaghi to see what and how much can be done in terms of our financial commitments to meet your request. I believe I need not assure you just how happy I would be were I able to satisfy you; but I must also give due consideration to my responsibilities and obligations and ensure that everything is properly balanced. In addition, we are in our 1st year of the new company’s activity, which is burdened with extra, substantial expenses that must be met; in other circumstances I would have had more freedom and greater opportunity to find a solution. You are too experienced in business matters not to understand what it means to say: 1st year of activity!

   While we are on this subject, I must ask you again, and heartily, to submit your invoice to our Administration. If the amount you have received in advance is greater than your actual charges, it matters little and will hardly be an inconvenience for you; but you can be certain that this impossibility to settle our account with you causes me serious embarrassment.... and because of you I look like a poor administrator. See to it then that you present your invoice; if anything is left over to our credit, think nothing of it; and in any case things will soon be squared, given the important affairs you are currently handling for us.

   It would perhaps be good to begin by typesetting what you have ready: you can order the compositor Brambilla to do this, specifying that the proofs should be given to no one, and that they should be printed and corrected by him and by Galli , with the work completed in this manner.

   I will be in Milan the evening after tomorrow, Tuesday, and will leave again Thursday. My arm is very much better but I have not yet fully recovered, and particularly at night the throbbing pain returns to my shoulder!!... Thank you for your concern.
