Mi giunge graditissima la di lei lettera 15 corr/= e mi affretto ringraziarla perché io la considero quale augurio lieto pel nuovo anno. Le giudiziose osservazioni in essa contenute sono per me novella prova della posatezza del di lei carattere e della serietà de’ di lei intendimenti: tali qualità sono per se stesse due solide basi sulle quali Ella poco a poco potrà innalzare quel bell’edificio ch’è il nostro scopo comune: ciò le dica che è sempre viva in me la fiducia ch’Ella potrà perfettamente riuscire a corrispondere per intero alla non piccola responsabilità dell’oggi ed anche a quella che si farà maggiore se le speranze liete che noi abbiamo, condurranno codesta filiale ad ampio sviluppo.
Credo poi che fatta la pratica completa di ciò che riguarda l’amministrazione ed il giro commerciale, Ella avrà colla maggior sicurezza acquisita, l’animo e la mente più disposti alla parte artistica. Certo è utile assai uno speciale corredo di cognizioni e di sapere musicale: ma se è utile, non lo credo indispensabile: il tirocinio sarà più lungo, è vero, ma quel continuo vivere in mezzo ad un ambiente musicale, esercita un’azione psichica ed inconsciente [sic], ben inteso qualora il cervello non sia assolutamente tetragono a qualsiasi manifestazione del bello. Aggiunga poi che bisogna conciliare le ragioni dell’arte colle ragioni del commercio - e non sempre la profonda cognizione dell’arte stessa è utile consigliera! - Io pure, se ho il vantaggio di poter a primo colpo d’occhio giudicare della correttezza scolastica d’un lavoro, molte e molte volte rimango dubbioso sul valore ch’esso potrà poi acquistare presso la massa del pubblico, in gran parte ignorante. Meglio quindi lo studiare il gusto del pubblico stesso = guardare attenti da quale parte gira la banderuola della moda ed orientarsi di conformità.

I have received your most welcome letter of the 15th of this month, and I hasten to thank you because I consider it to be glad tidings for the new year. Your judicious observations therein are renewed proof of your composure and seriousness of commitment, qualities that are in themselves two solid bases upon which you can gradually raise that marvelous edifice which is our common goal: this is to say that I remain fully confident of your ability to perfectly fulfill the considerable responsibility you have now and the even greater one to come if, as we hope, we can bring about the substantial development of this affiliate.
I also believe that once you have become sufficiently experienced in managing the affiliate’s administrative and commercial affairs, this greater sense of practical security will free your heart and mind for more artistic matters. Certainly it can be extremely useful to have some knowledge and understanding of music; but while it is useful, I do not believe it is indispensible. Your training will take longer, this is true, but living continuously in a musical environment has an effect upon the mind both consciously and unconsciously, understood of course that one’s brain is not absolutely refractory to any manifestation of beauty. I will further add that one needs to reconcile artistic and commercial motivations – and a profound understanding of art is not always the best council! – Even I, who have the advantage of being able to assess at a glance how technically “correct” a work may be, am time and time again left doubting just how much it would be appreciated by the mass market, most of whom are musically uneducated. It is better therefore to study the preferences of the public, to pay close attention to which way the winds of fashion blow and to orient oneself accordingly.
I am also happy to have your information regarding the employees of this affiliate, and I authorize you to reward them as you see fit, so long as you can satisfy them without compromising the interests of the company.
