Sig. Cesare Blanc

I received your letter of yesterday with displeasure, and I say displeasure because while I am always happy to grant requests made to me, it pains me considerably when, for reasons of fairness and of the facts, I cannot grant them.

I state as a matter of fairness — because one need only compare the monthly salaries paid by the administrations of the principal Milanese companies (with the exception of the banks, where the monthly pay is much lower in spite of very long workdays) to confirm that you have, at this point, attained a pay level that very few can claim.

I state as a matter of fact — because, notwithstanding the excellent qualities you possess (and were it otherwise, you would not be occupying your current position), I cannot say I am always satisfied with the way in which you carry out your assigned tasks. Not to mention the failure to update the Protocol Register [in a timely manner] – I don’t think I need to remind you about certain deficiencies regarding orderly workflow, certain failings in keeping after the records, which could have consequences for our company! Without mentioning that probably, were I to undertake an audit, I would find that the paperwork was hardly kept in an orderly fashion!!

It pains me to read in your letter that you have decided to ask for a raise based on your workload. I had already taken that workload into account when I treated you more as a friend would, I daresay, than as a General Manager would!! But if your workload has increased beyond what our administration can ascertain, certainly I, as General Manager, cannot verify that.

In summary, therefore, I have to state that I cannot consider your request, precisely because your monthly pay, to which is also added a yearly bonus, is what we can in all fairness allow. To give you proof of my benevolence I could perhaps, on a quarterly or a semester basis, compensate you for some occasional extraordinary work with one-time incentive remuneration, but this would be without any obligation on the part of the administration. In the meantime, with best and warmest regards as always,
