Signor Tito Santi

Ufficio Ragioneria

CLET002130

28 December 1907

Signor Tito Santi

   Accounting Office

With regard to your letter of 26 December. The year-end bonuses were introduced by me, who proposed an amount to be used for this purpose to the Shareholders, and I alone am the judge and arbiter of how and to whom they are distributed. I can therefore suspend and even abolish them, and no one has the right to be involved in either decision. The tone of your letter gives every indication you want to transform the simple effect of a courteous gesture of generosity on the part of the General Manager and the Shareholders into a right: and that’s not all!!... You even presume that these bonuses should be individually proportioned, almost as if you wanted to create a profit-sharing voice in the Financial Report. Now for that, you deceive yourself completely! – to the point that, in response to your observations regarding what I decide to do in all good conscience and for which I am totally responsible, I would almost find it appropriate to eliminate such bonuses, allowing only for the more than sufficient raises that the Administration usually awards. You then, in particular, were given a monthly raise last year, which is far better because it represents a benefit that is constant, rather than a single, greater or lesser sum that arrives just once.

In conclusion, while the presence of Accountants is good for an Administration, I do not think the same of employees who think they can account for matters beyond their office duties. Therefore, in order to bring a halt to this kind of accounting, for which it would appear that you have made yourself the spokesman, I must regretfully inform you that from January 1908 you are dismissed from our employment.
