Dear Counselor,
The Maestro passed through Milan — I saw him and we spoke at length of the noted affair — but, as I already knew full well, he was unable to suggest a solution that was practical and possible, and he confessed that even Leonardi, in your presence, could only digress rather than state directly what can be done.
Puccini has left for Bayreuth and Karlsbad, and we've agreed that when he returns, that is, in early September, it will be necessary that you, he, I, and the Attorney for the Ditta Bronzini meet together here to set out the terms of this mess — which is exactly how I see it.
Regarding the famous article of his old contract, Puccini told me that he wrote to you saying not to bring it up (!!), but that is not what I intend to do: if we are able to reach an agreement about Leonardi, Puccini will have to reach an agreement with the new General Manager.
Therewith I have written you as is my responsibility. Until we meet again then, dear Counselor — believe me always
sincerely yours Tito Ricordi
