Dear Mr. Carner,

I have received your letter of June 18th.

I am pleased to hear you are working on the Puccini book, but I am afraid I can give you little help.

I can arrange for you to consult the original MS of the operas, but, apart from this, we possess no other material we can put at your disposal. We have, of course, a number of letters, but these we have decided will remain unpublished for the time being.

Regarding Juvenilia and sketches, we possess nothing of the kind. I should advise you to write to the widow of Puccini’s only son, and heiress of the whole Puccini estate. Her present address is: Mrs. Rita Puccini, Corso Matteotti 5, Milan.

I cannot tell you anything about my plans for September next. I expect I shall be here, but it sometimes happens I have to leave at a moment’s notice. I hope however we shall be able to meet. In any event you should let me know the exact date of your arrival, so that I can arrange for the MS to be withdrawn from the safe custody.

With best regards,

Yours Sincerely,
