G Ricordi e C.

Workshops in Porta Vittoria

City

I would be remiss not to inform you of our extreme dissatisfaction and displeasure for the poor operation and confusion that dominate our Workshops, and for the many infractions to rules and regulations. The specific information we have received and the results of our investigations lead us to believe that these problems are far more serious than they first appeared to be, and we are firmly determined to censure, without mercy or regard, anyone who does not observe or enforce the maximum discipline in all matters great and small, whether due to poor example or to dangerous complacency.

If, for the sake of justice, we must recognize that part of the responsibility lies with the office of Management, for the same reason we must assign it partly to you as well. It is absolutely necessary that each party focus on one’s own duties and not invade the sphere of others; in that way each will have a clearly defined share of responsibility – nor does the desire to take on more than one is properly assigned lend greater efficiency to the operations of the Workshops or render one’s work indispensable.

We have given you repeated proof of our trust, and we believe that for now this trust should remain undiminished; but have no doubt that the serious irregularities we have recently observed have left us with a poor impression, demonstrating that the supervision you have exercised with regard to the shop workers is insufficient.

It is also necessary that one anomaly cease immediately: this has to do with all of the preparation and production of zinc [plates]. We have asked you repeatedly to give us exact instructions for the method of working zinc, including the relative ingredients, since we cannot be left unprepared with the means to carry on in the event of your eventual illness or absence. Your delay in fulfilling this repeated request reflects a lack of respect toward us, which offends us in no small measure. We therefore invite you, with a reminder of the consequences, to immediately see to the proper enactment of this obligation, reserving the right to have these preparations done in our presence and to verify the accuracy of the results. We also wish to be informed of the exact method of preparation of the Tessaro Paper for tachygraphic reproduction; please respond accordingly.

Trusting that we may henceforth continue to demonstrate the same confidence and esteem we have repeatedly shown you in the past, we salute you sincerely.
