You understand only too well what the end of one year and the beginning of another means! – and you therefore understand why I am late in responding to you. Your letter regarding the unfortunate Grus-Rabourdin affair is further proof of your invaluable friendship, and I am deeply grateful.
This is certainly a new situation, one that needs to be studied with calm. If you ask me whether I am completely satisfied with M. Rabourdin, I will frankly answer: no. What he told you concerning day-to-day music sales he has also said to me, and I believe he is mistaken. I do not pretend that a representative of our company should be expected to sing the praises of his own merchandise!!... But there is more than just the material aspect: I have seen that even the most important publishers in Paris do not disdain the practice of following their sales and listening to what the public wants – this involves the serious study of desiderata, which mere shop clerks do not always understand or do not make any effort to understand. Yet these day-to-day sales are what keep the coffers fed!!...and there is a way to preserve one’s dignity while personally supervising the sales and salesmen – otherwise why be the representative for a music publisher? For that matter, I hold Monsieur Grus in high regard; but the truth is that he has done nothing!... not because he doesn’t care, but because of the total hostility of his son, which I can clearly see by virtue of his cold comportment! M. Grus has written to me quite honestly and sincerely; but for the reasons I have already given and also… out of a certain sense of embarrassment, I have not yet found the right moment to respond.
The question is undeniably very serious. It would be less so if I were completely satisfied with M. Rabourdin – but on the other hand, I have little desire to expose our affairs to too many people with one change after another. Therefore I would once again appeal to your friendship, to your unmitigated honesty, and I ask:
Do you truly believe that M. Rabourdin possesses, if not all, at least some administrative qualities, and that he can acquire those which are necessary for the supervision of our company?
Do you believe that what has transpired and contributed to the rift between Grus and Rabourdin is of such a nature that it might cast M. Rabourdin in a discreditable light, as the letter from M. Grus seems to suggest?...
I am well aware of how delicate this all is – but you may be assured that it remains strictly between us.
With this then, I thank you in advance – and hope that you will always remember the gratitude and respect of
Yours sincerely,
Giulio Ricordi

Sig. Victor Souchon.
Parigi
S.o devoto
