Non ci voleva meno di un Giacosa , per persuadermi a leggere l'interminabile e vuota tiritera di quel Signore: sono le solite cose che da due anni mi tormentano, mi stuccano e mi ristuccano, quantunque dia loro quel peso che secondo me si meritano!!.... Non ho tempo di replicare per filo e per segno a quel lungo incensamento in persona propria!... ma questo è certo che risulta sempre più necessario che nessuno de' miei impiegati occupi anche un posto estraneo alle speciali loro incombenze. Mi farete questa giustizia di riconoscere che ciò predico da due anni!... ed in conseguenza ho pregato più e più volte perché, cominciando da Roma , la Società si procuri un altro agente. Mio caro, a' miei impiegati mi piace comandar io, e non altri, e cosi, sia poi Trincheri, o Trincari, il servire a terzi, non mi accomoda affatto. Per un riguardo alla Società, non ho messo in atto la mia idea: ma ora poi che da tale lungo rapporto, risulta od il poco buon volere, o l'inettitudine del Nuti , quare conturbas me ? E' nell'interesse comune cercare altri. Non parliamo del Sig.^r Orlando !!.. è un raddoppiare le incompatibilità, essendo esso mio impiegato e dipendente poi dal Nuti . Se l'Orlando crede più conveniente scegliere altro posto, può dimettersi e diventare lui l'agente: ma due incombenze no! - Fate dunque il piacere di cercare questo nuovo agente, perché oramai tali lotte piuttosto intestinali, che intestine, mi danno sui nervi e sono uomo di poca pazienza.

Accennando all'abbonamento Baude, il ns. buon amico dice una ben grossa castroneria!..dove sono le troppe esclusioni imposte dalla Casa Ricordi?...o che, non ha letto neppure la ns. circolare?...ve la accludo e mandategliela.

Certo non posso dirvi di comunicare tal lettera: comunicate voi per me, senza gridare: Ostia!! - e con quel garbo che unisce l'uomo d'affari al poeta, fate capire che il vero nodo della quistione sta nel trovare un altro agente = dopo, tutto anderà liscio....come olio....non di ricino, s'intende.

In ogni modo sono deciso a disporre perché il Nuti cessi dall'incarico.

Come me, certo troverete impossibile quella mistura e divisione di utili fra agente drammatico e musicale: proprio roba da....ministero! - sono di quelle famose partite di giro, che a furia di girare hanno finito col rovinare le finanze italiane.

Sempre benissimo voi e vostra famiglia?... Saluti cordiali. Il mio raffreddore va un po’ meglio: ma c'è ancora lusso di fazzoletti!!

Nothing less than a Giacosa could have persuaded me to read that Gentleman’s interminable and pointless diatribe : they are same things that torment me, that have sickened me time and again for the last two years, even though I deny them the dignity of any importance whatsoever!!.. I have no time to respond point by point to that lengthy list myself!... but one thing is certain: it is more necessary than ever that none of my employees should assume a position beyond their specific duties. You will do me the justice of acknowledging the fact that this is what I have been preaching for two years!... and as a result I repeatedly urged the Società [italiana degli autori] to procure another agent, beginning with Rome . My good man, I like to command my employees myself, not leave it to others; consequently I do not at all tolerate their working for third parties, no matter who these employees may be. I did not act upon this idea out of respect for the Società; but now that that long report [of yours] has revealed either the apathy or incompetence of Nuti , quare conturbas me [why need I be troubled]? It is in the interest of all concerned to look for someone else. Not to mention Sig. Orlando !!.. he is doubly incompatible, since he is my employee and reports to Nuti as well. If Orlando finds it more convenient to choose another position, he can resign and become the agent himself, but not maintain both! – Do me the favor then of searching for this new agent, because any more these conflicts, which are more intestinal than internal, are getting on my nerves and I am a man of little patience.

When he mentions the Baude subscription, our good friend is talking a great lot of rubbish!... where are these excessive exclusions imposed by Casa Ricordi?...or perhaps he has not even read our circular?... I include it here, send it to him.

Obviously I cannot tell you to give him this letter; let him know what I have said, but without shouting: Damn it all!! – and make him understand, with that politesse you have as a poet and businessman combined into one, that the crux of the matter is to find another agent – after which everything will go as smooth as oil… not castor oil, of course.

In any case, I have decided that Nuti should be relieved of his appointment.

No doubt you also find this mixture and division of income between dramatic agent and music agent to be impossible: it’s the stuff of… some government ministry! – like the famous “revolving” accounting method that has spun Italian finance straight into ruin.
