CLET000476

Milano, 10 Gennaio 1891

Illustre Maestro

1°= Scrivere a:

46 - Boul. Haussmann - Paris

Giulio Ricordi

Milan, 10 January 1891

Illustrious Maestro ,

In response to your esteemed letter of the 8th of this month :

Marchese Monaldi has finally taken the direct route!...... since his wanting a letter from me at any cost made no sense.

I have read and re-read how you would respond, and it seems to me that it does not constitute an actual obligation and is conditionally phrased in a manner that guarantees there would be no possibility of any damage to you. Perhaps, if this is truly necessary for Sig. Monaldi ’s purposes, I think it would be possible to add the name of the theatre, and to further emphasize that you reserve the right to a final decision. And since you, Maestro, were kind enough to write to me about it, I will allow myself to transcribe the part you have indicated, underlining the added words, which you may then judge to be appropriate or not.

“In the event I should decide to finish and stage Falstaff , you may then stage it for the first subsequent production in Rome , at the Teatro Costanzi , always on the condition that, in my judgment, all necessary elements for the best possible performance are present.”

This way I think all of your concerns are protected, and perhaps not even Talleyrand would be able to find the two lines to hang a man .

I am returning Monaldi ’s letter to you.

The plan established with Panattoni and Dina would be to come to you in Genoa on the 15th of this month, arriving mid-day at 12:08 and departing in the evening at 6:48; this would give us all of 4 or 5 hours necessary to chat…. and to bother you.

Meanwhile it is necessary to do the following:

1. Write to:

M.r Pilastro – procurator

46 Rue Notre Dame des Victoires – Paris

a letter in which you return the assignation [summons] you received in Genoa on ……….. – and notifying him that you name him your avoué [procurator] for all decisions it will be in your interest to execute.

2. Said letter should be included with another addressed to G. Ricordi e C. for M.r J. Pisa.

46 Boul. Haussmann – Paris

and with this you will notify him that you are sending him what was requested via telegram, and that he should act according to the instructions he will have received from Milan.

Obviously, everything must be sent by registered mail.

You will never believe how very much all of this pains me!! – But for now I will not disturb you further: there will be time for this on the 15th! – Be advised that I will bring the Bank Transfer myself, as agreed.

Even if the reason for my upcoming visit there is disagreeable, I will in any case be more than happy to see you and Sig.ra Peppina , and to find you both in optimum health. Meanwhile my fondest regards.

                                     Yours most gratefully,

                                     Giulio Ricordi
