Illustre Maestro

Confermandole la mia lunga d'jeri, non La affliggerò oggi con un’altra lunga in risposta alle due di Lei lettere d'jeri : brevemente le dirò che il Confalonieri fece una baggianata: gli dissi di intestare il conto al Maestro Verdi, e poi mandarlo a me pel pagamento: si vede non si è rammentato di ciò, e lo spedì a Lei direttamente. Manderò domani a pagare le £12,50, e le troverà poi nei conti del 1° sem. 91.

Il riparto Aprile di £134:87 è il credito a Lei spettante per riscossioni della nostra Società Autori: tale somma fu a noi versata, e perciò figura sul di Lei Avere. Ciò la sorprenderà forse?.... ma dopo tante fatiche e..... tante odiosità siamo riesciti a qualche cosa!. E' vero che con £134:87.... non v'è da fare scialo! - ma infine è un principio, ed anche i piccoli diritti nei caffè e simili, cominciansi a rispettare.

Prendo nota del pagamento pel 15 corrente: e come al solito credo che a Lei farà comodo un Bono della Banca Nazionale .

Ella accenna ancora all'affare Benoit !....  ed io vi penso giorno e notte!!...... ma di ciò jeri le scrissi dettagliatamente: oggi volevo scriverle ancora del ..... Pancione divus Optimus Maximus .... mi pare che basti la misura: a dimani dunque.

Sempre grave lo stato di mia suocera , però oggi con un qualche miglioramento: mia moglie e mia cognata non la lasciano quasi mai - speriamo che tante cure abbiano felice risultato.... ma non ho molta fiducia.

Oh!...mondo birbone..... nullo die senza fastidi, senza dispiaceri!...... per fortuna che di quando in quando un certo Mago..... uno, due, tre… salta fuori, e dà di sfrego a tutte le brutte cose!. - Ave et hosanna, o Mage!..artis stella!..

Illustrious Maestro ,

   In confirming the contents of my lengthy letter from yesterday, I will avoid bothering you today with another long one referring to your two letters from yesterday . In short, I can tell you that Confalonieri made a careless mistake: I told him to add the expense to Maestro Verdi’s account, and then to send the bill to me for payment; but it appears he must have forgotten and sent the bill directly to you. I will have the £12.50 paid tomorrow, and you will find it on your account for the 1st semester of 1891.

   The April allotment of £134.87 is the credit you are owed for collections made by our Society of Authors: that sum was delivered to us, and therefore results as Income on your account. Perhaps that surprises you?.... but after so much effort and …… so much odious behavior from others, we are able to make some progress! It is true that with £134.87…. there isn’t much to squander! – but then again it’s a start, and even the smaller rights coming from coffee shops and the like are beginning to be respected.

   I have made note of the payment for the 15th of this month, and as usual I imagine a Transfer to the National Bank will be convenient for you.

You again mention the Benoit affair !.... and I think about it day and night!! ...... but I wrote you about it in detail yesterday; today I wanted to return to ….. Pancione divus Optimus Maximus [Big Belly the Divine, Best and Greatest]…. I imagine that magnitude of reference will suffice; so, until tomorrow.

   The condition of my mother-in-law ’s health remains serious, but with some improvement today. My wife and her sister are nearly always by her side – let us hope that the considerable care she receives brings some beneficial result….but I have little hope that will happen.

   Oh!... what a rascally world this is….. nullo die [not a day] without annoyance, without unpleasantness!...... were it not that fortunately from time to time a certain Wizard….. one, two, three… pops up, and rubs all the ugly things away! – Ave et hosanna, o Mage!.. artis stella!..
