Caris.o Illica.

Dearest Illica,

I have received your two letters, both of them most interesting, and I thank you very much for the trouble you took to keep me informed regarding “Pasquirolian” events.

Always the poet, and a volcanic one to boot, you see and foresee events that I, quite the sceptic, must make considerable effort not to find if not impossible, at least highly improbable. How many times has there been talk of financial difficulties and imminent catastrophes?.... It’s true that there can be no stench without some sort of carcass behind it! – but I wouldn’t believe for now that we’re talking about a rotting corpse! – Add to that that the tempests and hailstorms have done little or nothing to diminish the perception that the value involved must be immense!!... while..... there is nothing left of effective value: operas that at this point have been squeezed for all they were worth, the new ones 0 x 0 = 0! – the only value one could give to a failing competitor.

A foreign company would never make such a deal!... What property would it acquire?... We know what the French repertory is worth; and who has any faith in the Italian repertory of the future?..

And what about the competition from us?.. So a foreign company could never purchase it unless the price were disastrous!-

Where the poet ends and the practical man comes in, that’s where one sees the danger that a move made by you could be interpreted as being done in agreement with me: which would mean upsetting [our] plans! – Quid [So what] then?... I think doing nothing is best: if the fruit is rotten, it will fall on its own; but if they harvest it in time, they’ll put it on a bed of straw to ripen!

Certainly, I delight in the thought of being rid of a person who imagines himself a powerful patron of the arts but has done nothing but bring the theatres of Italy to ruin and adulterate music by promoting halfwits as though they were geniuses! Were it possible to clean the Augean stables, to provide serious assistance for truly deserving young composers, to keep the famously self-important impresarios at bay!.... lovely to imagine, but perhaps I have to tell myself: these are the dreams of a poet!

How is your health these days?... How is Germania going?... very well I hope: but don’t forget the second course at Salsomaggiore. I’m leaving the morning after tomorrow; here is my address, in the event something comes up and you need to let me know:

[added vertically in the margin]

I received a crate of Franchetti’s wine! – And did your cumquibus [money] for the semester arrive?

Do you like where you are passing your vacation?.... One, two – no, three hearty handshakes. Yours warmly,

Giulio Ricordi
