Caro Illica,

Sta bene per sabato 19 – ma siccome alle 14 debbo trovarmi in Via Berchet per una seduta così io direi di leggere Judith alle 11 in casa di Vittorio Gnecchi e rifocillarci dopo a colazione (alle 12.30); così io sarei sicuro di essere libero per le ore 14. In tale senso telefono a Vittorio Gnecchi.

Quanto a Pierino, ehm! ehm!! malgrado gli anni trascorsi, sento troppo l'amarezza di "Iris" e non vorrei ricominciare le esperienze di vivisezione di un tempo. E poi – inter nos – lei crede ancora a Mascagni? io poco, tanto poco che è quasi niente.

Dear Illica,

                Castellarquato

 

   Saturday the 19th is fine — but since I need to be in Via Berchet at 14:00 for a meeting, I'd say to read Judith at 11:00 at Vittorio Gnecchi's home and then have a restorative lunch together (at 12:30); that way I'll be sure to be free by 14:00. I'll telephone Vittorio Gnecchi and let him know.

   As for Pierino, ahem! ahem!! despite all the years that have passed, I continue to feel quite bitter over "Iris" and I have no desire to suffer that kind of vivisection again. And then — inter nos — do you still have faith in Mascagni? me, not much, so little in fact that I'd say hardly at all.
