In attesa mi pregio riverirla distint[amente]

Sig. Annibale Castelli

Busto Arsizio

Subsequent to our conversation and the excellent information I have received in your regard, Sir, I confirm my decision to hire you as Director of our Workshops. I gave you an overview of the responsibilities that you would encounter, and I repeat that they are twofold in nature: administrative and disciplinary. Application of the latter is easy; the former comes with experience, requiring more or less time according to the individual’s intelligence and determination, which I have no doubt I have accurately observed in you. I believe it is incumbent upon me to remind you that the position involves considerable responsibility and a certain amount of sacrifice, given that the hours are those of the workers plus occasional evenings.

In the event, therefore, that you accept the position offered above, and keeping in mind what you told me regarding your past earnings, I am prepared to make the following proposals.

a) Employment beginning on this upcoming 1 August; it would be preferable if you could be free 3 or 4 days beforehand to make the transition.

b) 5 Months reciprocal trial period, that is to the end of the current 1888, with a monthly salary of Lire 225 (two hundred twenty-five)

c) Once confirmed, your stipend will be raised to £ 250 (two hundred fifty) per month from 1 January 1889 to 31 December 1890

d) idem after that date, your stipend will be brought to £ 275 (two hundred seventy-five) per month from 1 January to 31 December 1891

e) idem after that date, your stipend will be definitively fixed at £ 300 (three hundred) per month.

Together with the stipend there is the advantage of free lodging (unfurnished) in the rooms designated for that purpose; residence on the Plant premises is obligatory.

Having read this brief summary of the general conditions, you can formulate an exact idea of the position you are being offered and give me a definitive response, which I will be pleased to receive if it is one of acceptance.

Meanwhile I have the pleasure of extending my highest regards.

Yours most sincerely,

Giulio Ricordi
