Ritorno in questo momento da Venezia e mi affretto confermarle i telegrammi ch’ebbi l’onore di inviarle da quella città. Parecchi affari d’alta importanza e di somma urgenza della mia azienda, non mi permettono ora di disporre in modo alcuno del mio tempo, e siccome la mia massima di condotta è di anteporre gli interessi che a me sono affidati, a’ miei personali, così debbo ripeterle che per le circostanze suaccennate non mi è possibile d’intervenire alla seduta indetta per postdomani. La persona che ha la mia procura è assente fino alla fine del mese: e parmi, anzi ritengo affatto superfluo mandare chiunque altri in mia vece, poiché non avrebbe voce deliberativa, ed interverrebbe semplicemente “ad referendum” la mia obbligazione non avendo valore se non dal mio procuratore .

Ritenendo dunque che sia indispensabile, o quanto meno utile, una seduta, questa può sempre aver luogo, ed io potrò esserne informato, ben inteso mantenendo sempre libera la mia azione, poiché in caso consimile assenza non significa annuenza.

Ebbi pure un cortese di Lei biglietto particolare, e mentre la ringrazio cordialmente della cortese deferenza, bisogna ch’io La preghi di rimettere a più tardi l’intervista. Innanzi tutto è probabile ch’io debba ripartire domani stesso, ma ancorché ciò non avvenisse, posso dire che non solo tutte le mie ore, ma i minuti sono impegnati, avendo espressamente in Milano i miei avvocati e procuratori per affari di Ufficio.

Se a lei non sarà discaro, o non le mancherà il tempo, d’informarmi di quanto venne discusso nell’indetta seduta, glie ne sarò obbligatissimo, bastandomi ch’Ella mi mandi per sommi capi l’andamento della seduta stessa: in caso diverso mi informerò presso qualcuna delle persone presenti.

Ho intanto l’onore di riverirla distintamente e ripetermi di Lei

   I have just returned from Venice and hasten to confirm the telegrams I had the honor of sending you from that city. Numerous terribly important and extremely urgent company affairs completely occupy my time for now, and given that my standard of comportment is to place those interests with which I am entrusted before my own, I must repeat that due to the aforementioned circumstances it is not possible for me to attend the meeting set for the day after tomorrow. The person whom I have designated as my proxy is absent until the end of the month; and it seems, indeed I find it absolutely superfluous to send anyone else in my place, given that he would have no deliberative voice and could only intervene in my behalf simply “ad referendum” , not with the authority of my proxy .

   Since I therefore consider the meeting indispensable, or at least useful, it can always take place, and I can be informed of the proceedings while clearly remaining free and open to action as in any similar situation where absence does not signify approval.

   I also received your kind confidential note, and while I sincerely thank you for your courteous deference, I must ask you to postpone our interview, primarily because it is likely that I must already leave again tomorrow; but even if that were not to happen, I can say that not only every hour, but every minute of my time is taken, having expressly convened my lawyers and procurators in Milan for Company business.

   If you do not find it disagreeable or do not lack the time to inform me of the discussion that takes place during the meeting to be convened, I would be most obliged, requiring only a summary of the principal points of the proceedings; otherwise I will obtain the information from one of those present.
