devoto  Giulio Ricordi

CLET001934

Milan, 20 December 88

Sig. M. Alberto Franchetti

Florence

Yesterday evening I received from your Secretary the letter I was told to expect. I am truly disheartened that the state of your wife ’s health prevents you from returning here. Your presence is absolutely necessary, and I deeply regret that such unfortunate circumstances force you to be absent.

With regard to what you wrote concerning the performance, I must categorically refuse any and all responsibility!!.... I can supervise organizational matters, I can ensure that the wishes of the composer are satisfied, but I have neither the power nor the character to take the place of the composer when it comes to artistic interpretation!!!...

May I remind you that I had told you how difficult it was to set the tempi with the metronome!... You should know then that just yesterday evening I checked some of the tempi that were taken during the rehearsal with the metronome, and they corresponded precisely to the numbers you marked; but you want them to be faster!.... This means I would certainly think twice before telling Maestro Faccio to use those markings, because the tempi would be slow!!

Seeing how I was not entirely convinced by the rehearsals, due to your absence, I absolutely decline all responsibility. But I can hardly hide my enormous disappointment caused by a combination of such unfavorable circumstances!!!... This leads me to insist again that, if your wife ’s health will even barely permit it, you must immediately return to Milan , even because it seems to me that a composer should never desert the field of battle when things are most difficult.

In the hope therefore to see you again soon, I remain, with the utmost respect and consideration,

Most sincerely,

Giulio Ricordi
