Il 22 circa dello spirato Novembre venivamo informati che presso la cartoleria di Lenzi Edoardo  Via Legnano 2, si trovavano esposti parecchi libretti di opere, stampati dalle nostre officine. Recatosi alla detta cartoleria un nostro impiegato, vi acquistava infatti due libretti: I Puritani  e Guglielmo Tell  da noi stampati; con copertina semplice di carta grigia. I libretti che escono controllati dalle nostre officine, oltre le copertine speciali, portano un timbro a secco nell’angolo inferiore sinistro, nel quale leggesi l’anno ed il mese di pubblicazione.

Questo timbro a secco manca nei due libretti acquistati presso il Lenzi, perciò è evidente che furono sottratti al controllo: né, si può dire che si tratti di libretti già messi in commercio, od acquistati da Imprese teatrali, perchè in ogni modo porterebbero il predetto contrassegno.

Siamo inoltre informati che il Sig.r Lenzi tiene in vetrina e commercia di parecchi altri libretti, dei quali taluni sono completi, cioè hanno le relative copertine.

Dall’assieme delle suesposte cose noi certo non possiamo affermare che tutti i libretti esistenti presso il Sig.r Lenzi siano di provenienza furtiva: ma pur tuttavia un grave dubbio ne rimane, specialmente pei due libretti acquistati.

Ci facciamo un dovere di unire alla presente:

1° - I due libretti acquistati presso il Sigr. Lenzi

2° - Due libretti estratti da quelli regolarmente esistenti presso il nostro Magazzino.

Nella certezza che l’On.e Questore vorrà disporre in quel modo che stimerà più opportuno, onde chiarire l’esatta provenienza dei libretti esistenti presso il Sig.r Lenzi Edoardo, abbiamo l’onore di porgere i più vivi ringraziamenti, e colla massima stima e considerazione rassegnarci

   Around 22 November last we were informed that the stationery shop of Edoardo Lenzi in via Legnano 2 had on display several opera libretti printed in our facilities. When one of our employees visited the shop, he was in fact able to purchase two libretti: I puritani and Guglielmo Tell printed by us, with a plain grey paper cover. The libretti that leave our plant after inspection all have, in addition to special covers, a blind stamp in the lower left corner bearing the year and month of publication.

   This blind stamp is missing in the two libretti purchased from Lenzi, therefore it is evident that they escaped our internal control; nor can it be said that these libretti were already in retail circulation, or that they were acquired from theatres, because in any case they would still carry the aforesaid blind stamp.

   We are further informed that Sig. Lenzi has a good many other libretti on display in his window and for sale, some of them complete, which is to say they have their relative covers.

   While we certainly cannot affirm from the above that all of the libretti in the possession of Sig. Lenzi were obtained from clandestine sources, some serious doubt remains, especially for the two libretti that were purchased.

   We find it incumbent upon us to include with this letter:

1 – The two libretti purchased from Sig. Lenzi

2 – Two libretti taken from those that are regularly stocked in our Warehouse.

   Certain that the Hon. Questore will act in the manner he finds most opportune in order to clarify the exact provenance of the libretti in the possession of Sig. Edoardo Lenzi, we humbly extend our most sincere thanks, yielding to you with the utmost respect and consideration.
