Mi credo in dovere d’informarla che essendosi jeri tenuta adunanza de’ miei egregi consoci per l’approvazione del bilancio, vennero prese in attento esame le condizioni di codesta filiale, e mi spiace veramente doverle dire che non si ebbe motivo di felicitazione. Nessun incremento né finanziario, né morale, anzi uno statu quo dannoso, e che lascia poca speranza di migliore avvenire. Né può venire a discolpa asserito il ristretto movimento d’affari di codesta città, in quanto che in questo frattempo dacché esiste codesta filiale, si sono costì impiantati non pochi altri editori, i quali ne possono fare una sensibile concorrenza: innanzi ai meschini risultati sopradetti, certamente i miei consoci hanno tutte le ragioni d’essere malamente impressionati, tanto da aver accennato al bisogno di radicali mutamenti, e di misure più estreme ancora. Com’Ella può vedere io ho potuto facilmente rassicurarli in quanto concerne la di Lei persona, stimabilissima sotto ogni rapporto: ma naturalmente non ho potuto cambiare la positiva risultanza dei fatti. E’ dunque necessario che a togliere ogni pericolo futuro, Ella nulla lasci d’intentato per imprimere vigore alla Casa affidata alle di Lei cure, allargando le relazioni d’affari e le relazioni con maestri ecc. ecc. Anche la vendita di edizioni estere, procede magra assai: capisco che sarebbe assai meglio non ricorrere a questo ramo, ma dobbiamo subirlo per forza, ed impedire che gli altri, di questo ben forniti, attraggano a sé la clientela. Ed è un fatto che nessuno costì sa che anche presso la ns. Casa si può trovare musica d’edizione estera, fra la più in voga.
Ho stimato non poterle tacere quanto sopra ed ho fiducia ch’Ella farà in modo col di Lei zelo ed intelligente lavoro, di mettermi in grado di cancellare ogni meno che favorevole impressione in merito a codesta filiale.

I find it my duty to inform you that, during the reunion yesterday with my esteemed associates for approval of the financial statement, the conditions of this affiliate branch were attentively examined, and I am truly sorry to have to say that there was no reason to be pleased. Neither sales nor morale have increased, indeed there is a harmful status quo which leaves little hope for future improvement. Nor can the limited amount of business in this city be claimed by way of justification, in that during the period of time since this affiliate was established not a few other publishers have set up shop there and proved to be decidedly competitive. Given the meager aforementioned results, my associates certainly have every reason to be poorly impressed, so much so that a possible need for radical changes was broached, not to mention still more extreme measures. As you can see, I have easily been able to reassure them with regard to you personally as most estimable in every respect, but naturally I was not able to change the undeniable result of the facts. It is therefore necessary that, in order to eliminate any future risk, you attempt every possible means to invigorate the Company which has been entrusted to your care, expanding your business affairs and relationships with music teachers, etc. etc. What is more, sales of foreign editions continue to be quite poor. I understand that it would be far better not to resort to this area of commerce, but we are forced to do so to prevent the others who are well stocked from attracting clientele for themselves. And it is a fact that no one in that city is aware that foreign editions, for which there is considerable interest, are available in our shop as well.
I have thought it best not to remain silent concerning the above, and I trust that you will find a way with your enthusiastic and intelligent effort to provide me with the means to cancel any impression of this affiliate that is less than favorable.
