Allow me, egregio Signore – if I may for a moment call your name to my assistance – to declare myself very Onorato [Honored] by the essay that you have been kind enough to send my way, and it is no exaggeration to say that reading it was one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. That gratification was augmented still further by the fact that you have courteously informed me you were familiar with the two articles in the
With regard to your examination of the issue, I am sufficiently experienced in the arts of journalism to know that such reports are always done for
I have insisted for many years that various reforms were necessary!... but instead of outright opposition, I always found myself faced with the powerful resistance of inertia, which is far worse. Perhaps it is the consequence of the Publisher’s
Thanks to 30 years of business experience, I can clearly see just how important
I therefore find it truly criminal that this theatre should be allowed to deteriorate, both from an artistic perspective and from a utilitarian one for the considerable commercial activity it brings to our city. It will be truly fortunate if, thanks to your inquiry, such an important question is not left dormant as in the past. You say you know nothing about the subject..... but I don’t believe it. Art is something entirely spiritual in nature; those who feel it love it, and those who love it are far more capable of evaluating it than those so-called intellectuals and eggheads who destroy the imagination and the heart with their pedantry. Among the arts then, it is music that speaks mysteriously to the masses. All that nonsense about initiation into the arts is nothing but a rusty old weapon of the critics.!... if the music is good, the performance good, and the public impartial, be it even uneducated, the best and most intelligent judgments are sure to be had. The ignorant are more than welcome, then, when they love Art – and I am happy to take my place beside you, egregio Signore, as part of this multitude, which is nothing less than all of humanity. Art must speak and live for humanity, and the greater the love of a people for art, the more gentle the heart will be – and the more alert the mind.
I therefore hope you are able to see to it that
As you can see, I have abused of your courtesy..... in the most indelicate manner.... and I have annoyed you with such a tiresome, lengthy letter. I beg your indulgence and hope that you will accept this token of utmost respect and consideration from
Yours most sincerely, Giulio Ricordi
