I impute the letter you sent me today to an especially emotional state of mind, since I truly cannot explain its form and content otherwise, nor the conclusions you reach. If I were to heed my sense of indignation I would have doubtless told you that your presence in our company was no longer possible; but since I never let my initial reactions prevail, and I do not believe that what was certainly not intended to offend should be considered offensive, I will ignore the aberrant character of your letter. I believe I have already told you on another occasion that I cannot make a definitive decision in your regard, if not during a meeting of the board, and obviously I cannot call the members together for only one reason like this one, which may be extremely important for you but which is only relatively so for them as one of various business affairs to be addressed during a meeting.

In addition, I am more than slightly amazed that you fail to understand how my biding for time is entirely in your favor, having hoped that meanwhile you would be able to resume your proper position, while for my part I have done all I could of late to see that everything is monitored by the Direction. Have you taken advantage of this?...  I do not know, since you have never said anything to me about it.

In other circumstances I would have lodged a grievance against  you for your observations regarding a response I made to some of the workers, which needed immediate action and which was within my complete and exclusive right. And you create quite an odd confusion between this response and the answer you think you are owed, for which other information is needed; consequently all of the relative conclusions you draw are completely mistaken and seem to be the fruit of a sensitivity that, honorable and respectable though it may be, is now entirely out of bounds – and that perhaps could sometimes harm rather than help you as you go through life.

In conclusion, I must repeat that it is not within my power to give you a decisive answer until the board convenes, and that I cannot predict exactly when that will take place.

I hope that meanwhile I will be able to respond in a definitive and acceptable way to the objections that were made to me, and thereby confirm your current position.

This is all I can do for you – and meanwhile I have the pleasure of extending my sincere regards.
