While I am truly moved by your most courteous letter of today, and for your kind expressions of benevolence in my regard, I find myself in the most distressing position of being absolutely unable to accept the gift that you have entirely too generously chosen to send me as an expression of your sentiments. If I have in any way been able to satisfy the need of your Theatrical Management, one which is worthy moreover of all possible respect, I am more than happy; but this is no reason for me to accept such a significant gift, which places me in a compromising position and is something completely contrary to my habits and beliefs.

Permit me therefore to preserve the treasured memory of your letter, and if necessary, might you please formulate your attestation with it being understood that no gift was ever sent.

Do not take this response to such a courteous act on your part as an act of discourtesy from me: were our roles reversed and you found yourselves in my place, you would see that I am perfectly right. What you give me will be a true demonstration of your friendship and respect, and I will forever and equally remain most indebted to you.
