Noi le abbiamo dato troppe lunghe e ripetute prove della nostra amichevole fiducia, perchè nel contenuto della presente Ella non possa veder altro che l’esatta verità, all’esclusione di qualsiasi altro movente.
E’ un fatto che noi non ci siamo mai ricusati ad incontrare ingentissime spese non solo per l’impianto della
Ma ormai essendo passati non solo mesi, ma assai più di un anno, non è più il caso di continuare su di una via che ci rappresenta un lucro cessante ed un danno emergente.
Abbiamo chiesto alla nostra Direzione delle Officine un prospetto delle Rendite e spese della Tachigrafia dal 1° Luglio 1889 al 14 Giugno corrente, e le risultanze non solo sono cattive, ma addirittura spaventose. Anche l’ulteriore sviluppo dato alla Tachigrafia in seguito alle di Lei insistenze, non ha affatto reso migliori i risultati della stessa, ed i dati provano in modo irrefutabile che la produzione è così lenta, che le pagine di musica ne portano ad una spesa la quale è cinque volte tanto quella che noi incontriamo per le lastre incise. Perciò, non solo non ci avviciniamo alla produzione normale delle lastre incise, ma siamo affatto lontani ancora più dal numero di pagine tachigrafiche da Lei garantite nel preliminare contratto, le quali sommavano nientemeno che a cinque pagine di musica per ciascuna macchina tachigrafica.
E’ ovvio l’osservare che tale garanzia è la base fondamentale del sistema, e che questa mancando ora pienamente, la Tachigrafia non ha più ragione per essere adottata.
Visto le ingentissime somme da noi spese a tale scopo, non crediamo di più oltre aggiungere passività a passività, epperò abbiamo disposto per la chiusura della Sezione tachigrafica col primo del prossimo Luglio, riservandoci in pari tempo piena libertà d’azione anche per quei procedimenti legali resi inevitabili dalla mancata effettuazione della principale garanzia, quella cioè del quantitativo di produzione.
Noi siamo dolentissimi di dovere addivenire a simile determinazione, ma innanzi alla formidabile eloquenza dei fatti, dobbiamo senza ritardo provvedere a che, intanto, cessi una spesa affatto improddutiva [sic], e che viene a pesare così passivamente sul bilancio delle nostre officine.
Siamo poi certi ch’Ella ne renderà questa giustizia, che, cioè, da nessun altri avrebbe trovato quell’ampia fiducia e quella facoltà di esperimentare in ogni modo il di Lei trovato, avendo messo a di Lei intera disposizione tutti i non pochi mezzi di cui dispongono le nostre officine, e largheggiato in ogni modo nelle spese conseguenti.
Augurandoci possibile una amichevole soluzione, ci pregiamo intanto di riverirla distintamente e ripeterci

We have given you such extensive and repeated proof of our cordial trust in you for you not to be able to see that this letter contains nothing but the exact truth.
It is a fact that we have never refused to assume the considerable expense not only for the installation of the
But at this point, after not only months but much more than a year, it is no longer the case that we continue on a path that is unprofitable and increasingly costly for us.
We have requested a profit-and-loss prospectus of the Tachygraph from 1 July 1889 to 14 June of this year from our Direction of the Workshops, and the conclusions are not only poor but absolutely appalling. Even your insistence upon further development of the Tachygraph did not lead to any improvement, and the data prove beyond any doubt that production is so slow that the pages of music are five times more expensive than those normally produced from engraved plates. Therefore, not only are we lagging behind normal production rates from engraved plates, but we are in fact even further behind the number of tachygraphed pages you guaranteed in our preliminary contract, which amounted to no less than five pages of music for each machine.
Obviously that guarantee is the fundamental basis of the system, and since this has now completely fallen through there is no longer any reason to adopt the Tachygraph.
Given the enormous sum of money we have spent for this purpose, we have no desire to add on additional expenses; therefore we have arranged that the tachygraph department will be closed on the first of this coming July, reserving at the same time complete freedom to pursue those legal procedures that have been rendered inevitable by your failure to fulfill your principal guarantee, that is, regarding the quantity of production.
It pains us greatly to have been forced to make this decision, but in the face of such overwhelmingly obvious facts, we must immediately make arrangements to curtail for now what has proven to be an entirely useless expense, one that weighs so heavily upon the budget of our workshops.
Certainly you must admit in the name of justice that elsewhere you would not have found so much trust and freedom to be able to experiment in every way, with all of the considerable resources of our workshops at your disposal and with your consequent expenses so generously sustained.
