Spero che la seconda dei Vespri  avrà confermato il grande successo della prima. Non so poi com’Ella avrà utilizzato la somma rimessale come d’accordo, perché  credo che da Roma uno solo s’è mosso: il che prova l’inutilità di certe cose.

        Vengo ora a conoscere notizia, la quale mi ha molto meravigliato, ed è questa: ch’Ella per accordarsi col Signor Sonzogno , ha accettato l’imposizione di escludere da Roma qualsiasi opera nuova di proprietà della ns. Casa, obbligandosi invece di darne due del Sig.r Sonzogno stesso.

Se così è…… me ne congratulo con Lei: non già pel repertorio che sarà per dare, in merito al quale non me ne sono mai mischiato, essendo liberissimo di scegliere quanto meglio stima pel di lei interesse!! - ma, bensì, mi congratulo perchè detto repertorio è fatto per imposizione. Di ciò terrò memoria a momento opportuno, e come altri, avrò ancor io due pesi e due misure!

Augurandole buon fine di stagione, mi pregio ripetermi

   I hope that the second performance of Vespri will have confirmed the resounding success of the first. I have no idea how you will have utilized the sum remitted to you as agreed, because I believe there has been only one sign of any action from Rome – which only proves how useless some things are.

   Some news has recently come my way which truly amazes me, and it is this: that in order to reach an agreement with Signor Sonzogno , you have been forced to disregard any new opera our Company owns for Rome , promising instead to stage two that belong to the same Sig. Sonzogno .

   If this is so…… I must congratulate you: not for the repertory involved, regarding which I have never allowed myself to intervene, since you are perfectly free to choose as you see fit according to your own interests!! – but rather because this repertory has been determined by constraint. I will keep this in mind at the opportune moment, and like others, I too will use the same double standards!

   With all good wishes for a successful conclusion to the season, I am pleased to remain
