Ebbi l’onorata sua del 20 Gennajo: e se non risposi, vivamente ringraziandola per le di Lei cortesi premure, ne fu causa l’avvicendarsi di tristi ed importanti vicende politiche e di famiglia, pel che non volli venire a lei, quale poco gradito disturbatore. Ora però non mi è più possibile prolungare un silenzio riguardoso, visto che si avvicina la data del 10 Aprile, la quale pare definitiva per la discussione della nostra
Se la causa materialmente forse ha un interesse relativo, ne ha uno grandissimo per me nel lato morale, perciò anelo ad una vittoria, non tanto per ciò che può esservi di più o meno finanziario, quanto pel nome pressoché secolare della mia Casa, che fu sempre rispettato ed illibato.

Illustrious Signore [Avv. Tommaso Villa],
I received your honored letter of 20 January; and while I did not answer you then, thanking you warmly for your courteous solicitude, the cause was a combination of sad and important political and familial circumstances that prevented me from coming to disturb you in such an unwelcome way. Now, however, it is no longer possible for me to prolong my respectful silence, seeing that we are approaching the date of 10 April, which seems definitive for the opening of our most important court case in appeal. It is superfluous to say how much I count on your immensely valuable support, and how, even without considering the persuasive eloquence of your elevated language, your presence alone inspires me with boundless confidence.
While the case may have some relative material value, the moral side is extremely important for me: I yearn for victory not so much for some degree of financial redress but rather for the reputation of my Company, which for nearly a century has always been respected and untarnished.
I repeat, illustrious Signore, that I place my trust in you and remain calm and confident.
