Ho preso cognizione della richiesta fatta dagli addetti a codeste officine in merito all’importo di una settimana di deposito, anticipata. Se i signori addetti soffrono per la riduzione ad otto ore, io ne soffro assai più di loro tanto moralmente quanto materialmente: ma tutti dobbiamo sentire il contraccolpo delle pessime condizioni commerciali di tutto il nostro paese - ed anche la riduzione ad 8 ore, non sarebbe sufficiente nella nostra industria a bilanciare il danno enorme che dalle condizioni suddette a noi deriva. Non ho preso misure più radicali, perché troppo mi stanno a cuore tutti gli addetti alle officine, e volontieri faccio un sacrificio.
Ma tutto considerato, non è possibile ammettere la domanda fatta: già troppo difficile riescì il regolare questa partita, perché ora si distrugga quanto finalmente si poté fare: oltre a ciò, siamo in un mese nel quale, quando si hanno quattrini, si spendono facilmente, ed è quindi dovere di un buon padre di famiglia il provvedere perché ciò non succeda.
Io avevo, pur troppo, calcolato che sarebbe stato necessario osservare l’orario di 8 ore fino alla metà del venturo Novembre = ma prendendo soprattutto in considerazione le condizioni degli addetti alle officine, spero di riprendere l’orario solito ai primi del venturo Settembre, od al più tardi ai 15 dello stesso mese, pensando altresì che alla fine di Settembre vi sono gli impegni d’affitto. Questo è quanto umanamente è possibile di fare, non possedendo io una bacchetta magica per cambiare d’un tratto in buone, le cattive condizioni dell’industria

I have made note of the request from the employees of these workshops regarding the anticipated deposit of a week’s salary. While it is true that they suffer for the reduction of the workday to eight hours, I suffer still more, both morally and materially. We are all forced to feel the effects of this generally dismal business climate, and even the reduction to 8 hours is hardly sufficient to compensate for the enormous damage resulting from these aforesaid conditions. I have not taken more radical measures because I have the welfare of my employees at heart and willingly make the sacrifice.
But all things considered, I cannot agree to the request that was made: it was already so difficult to regulate this situation for it to be undone once it was finally possible. What is more, this is a month in which, when the money comes in, it is easily spent, and consequently like a good family father I must see that this does not happen.
Unfortunately, I had calculated that it would have been necessary to maintain the 8-hour workday up until mid-November; but considering the workers’ circumstances above all else, I hope to return to the normal schedule in early September or by the 15th of the month at the latest, especially because they will have their rent to pay at the end of September. This is all I can humanly do, since I have no magic wand that I could use to suddenly change the current industrial situation from bad to good.
