Milano 18 Marzo 1893.

Milan, 18 March 1893

Sig. Rag. Alessandro Calabi,

During the shareholders’ meeting on the 16th of this month, various important administrative decisions were made. Since I believe some of them should be carried out under your supervision and responsibility, I will give you here a general idea of what they entail, leaving the details to be determined later:

1. Warehouse: review the discounts in relation to the effective price of the merchandise; spot-check how the merchandise is controlled during movement in and out of the facility; determine whether and how it might be possible to cull the inventory again for overstock to be pulped in order to reorganize the warehouse; review the orders for reprints.

2. Copy Shop: verify the amount of pulped material and relative criteria used; identify print orders and jobs that seem to be in excess; weekly control.

3. Workshops: I have already informed the Office of the Direction of all relative instructions, after which it will be necessary to determine how to simplify the registrations, in agreement with the General Manager and the Office of the Direction; greater savings in administrative expenses, effecting audits only so far as they are useful; verify the percentages to be attributed to costs of labor and consumable goods as they actually occur, so that we can have an exact basis for determining the cost of sheet music and other such work whether for outside clients or not.

Finally, from these first steps we can then see whether it is worthwhile to proceed to others. Meanwhile I kindly ask that you examine the above and refer to me any observations you might have, counting on that enthusiasm and diligence I have appreciated in you these many years.

I await your response, and it is my pleasure to remain as always

Yours warmly,

Giulio Ricordi

General manager, G. Ricordi e C.
