Le compiego il bilancio di codesta filiale per l’esercizio 1892-93 = e certo questo bilancio deve fare a Lei la tristissima impressione che produsse in me e ne’ miei consoci. E’ infatti assai doloroso che gli utili che potevano aversi sieno stati interamente assorbiti dalle enormi spese di pubblicità, le quali hanno ridotto l’utile netto alla derisoria cifra di poche £s[terline] = 31 circa!! …. In ogni [modo], siccome tutta la responsabilità amministrativa pesa su di me, Ella comprenderà come io non possa assolutamente ammettere che tutte le risorse di cassa di codesta filale vengano assorbite dalle spese di pubblicità: ciò, caro Signor Bossetti, bisogna se lo lasci dire, è un fatto di cattiva amministrazione, e certo lo comprenderà perfettamente. E’ inutile mantenere una filiale in Londra, per arrivare al ridicolo risultato di 31 lire sterline di utile!!.... tanto più quando questo risultato deriva non già dal complesso giro di affari ma da spese eccessive non proporzionali e così gravi da rendere quasi, quasi passivo un bilancio che avrebbe potuto dare risultati soddisfacenti. Certo Ella avrà incontrato dette spese colla piena coscienza di fare l’utile della Casa: il risultato negativo deve ora convincerlo che i passi vanno fatti proporzionali alle gambe. Così debbo darle in via formale l’ordine di non oltrepassare in spese di pubblicità nel corso di un esercizio la somma di £s[terline] 120 = in casi eccezionali, Ella dovrà avere la mia autorizzazione per eccedere questo limite.
Voglia attenersi senza indugio a tale disposto, e fiducioso ch’Ella curerà sempre con zelo ed efficacia gli interessi a Lei affidati, mi pregio riverirla distintamente e ripetermi

I enclose the financial statement of this affiliate for the 1892-93 period of business, certain that it must make the same sad impression with you as it did with me and my fellow shareholders. It is in fact quite disappointing that what profit had been possible was completely absorbed by the enormous costs for publicity, which reduced the net profit to a mere total of around 31 pounds sterling!! In the fiscal year 1891-92 these expenses were 148 pounds sterling, while in 1892-93 they shot up to 512.9.3 – which means an increase of 9111,40 lire! – This is a most extraordinary fact, and if I did not have complete trust in the total and long-established honesty of the Manager of this English affiliate, it could well be grounds for me to draw the most unfortunate conclusions.
In any case, since all of the administrative responsibility falls to me, you will understand how I absolutely cannot allow that all of the cash resources of this affiliate be absorbed by the costs for publicity: this, dear Signor Bossetti, I must say is a matter of poor administration, and you no doubt understand this perfectly well. It is useless to maintain an affiliate in London only to arrive at the ridiculous result of 31 pounds sterling of profit!!... all the more when this result is not from problematic business matters but from excessive, disproportionate spending which is so grievous that it all but creates a deficit in a financial statement that should have given satisfactory results. No doubt you took on these costs fully intending to do something useful for the Company, but the negative result should now convince you that one must never bite off more than one can chew. Therefore I must formally order you not to exceed 120 pounds sterling in publicity costs for any given fiscal year; in exceptional circumstances you must obtain my authorization to exceed that limit.
Please respect this directive without delay, and confident that you will always be diligently attentive to the responsibilities you have been given, I’m happy to extend my respects and remain

It pains me greatly to observe yet again that we still have nothing regarding the situation of the cash ledger... After all that I have repeatedly written about this, what actions must I take?...
