M. Victor Souchon
Paris
I have just returned from Rome (though not with the Prix de Rome), and I hasten to thank you for your kind letter of the 25th of last month. For the moment nothing has been decided regarding the Tiercelin affair.
Giacosa informed me of your observations about M. Rabourdin. I presume it is superfluous, dear M. Souchon, to tell you how much respect I have for you, both for your friendly regard for my company, which you have proven time and time again, and for the confidence I have in your advice.
Certainly I do not find that M. Rabourdin demonstrates the qualities one needs to be a manager – perhaps he is a dilettante manager! – But I’m afraid it will not be easy to find a way to resolve the question in truly amicable terms, which is what I would prefer above all else because I have no specific cause for complaint.
You think M. Cougoul might be just the person we need and that he would be able to develop the Paris affiliate, which is something I have wanted for quite some time!! But under what conditions would M. Cougoul accept the management? ... because I agree that it would be useful to have him working for our company... but if his demands are too onerous it will be impossible to reach satisfactory terms.
I need to begin therefore with some idea of M. Cougoul’s thoughts on this matter – and then to see how to resolve the Rabourdin affair without any sacrifice on my part.
Giacosa told me you are convinced M. Rabourdin will resign if I refuse his proposal to invest a small amount of capital in the Company; but I have little hope of this, especially because of his mother, who insists that he be employed and very much wants him to keep the position he has acquired.
There you have a clear explanation of how things stand – I am sure that, given your keen understanding of the situation, you will find a way to arrange everything.
Do forgive me for the continual trouble I cause you... but I have more than enough to go around.
Please accept, dear Monsieur, my most cordial salutations.
Yours sincerely, Giulio Ricordi

Sigr Victor Souchon.
Parigi.
S.o do Giulio Ricordi
