We are here waiting for news of the opening session of the Chamber of Deputies, so that we know how things stand. But meanwhile I believe it’s useful for you to know that, with the change of Minister via Pasquirolo has picked up some steam and is working vigorously not only against the projected Legislation but also against the Barbiere Legislative Decree, which they would want withdrawn. And that not only out of contempt for the past Ministers, but also as a way of pushing Rudinì to embrace austerity with a vengeance, such that nothing should be done without the approval of Parliament.
Consequently Rosmini has lit fresh flames, and I know of secret meetings between the Presidency and some members of the deadly Council of the Società [degli] Autori [ed Editori], hoping to have powerful support from H[is] E[xcellency] the radical Ronchetti, Sonzogno’s lawyer!! – and from Guicciardini.
It would appear that for health reasons Rosmini is no longer going to Paris, but that Amar will go in his place – I don’t know if his attitude is “bitter” [amaro] à la Fernet-Branca, but he did have an opinion that was favorable to us in the original Sonzogno lawsuit, which was contrary to that of Rosmini.
In sum, the situation has grown dark and decidedly more difficult, therefore caution and the utmost vigilance are more necessary than ever.
