        Sono in possesso della preg. di Lei lettera in data 3 corr/.

        Ho tardato a risponderLe perché ero in attesa di riscontro da parte del Sig. Virgili, e perché, secondo il tenore di tale risposta, mi riserbavo di pigliare nuove determinazioni per la Succursale di Roma.

        Le annuncio ora che con mia lettera in data d’oggi ho dimesso il Signor Virgili dal posto sin quì da lui occupato: ciò per varie ragioni, e non ultima quella di evitare sin dal principio della di Lei nuova direzione un conflitto che sarebbe stato penoso per ambe le parti e dannoso al buon andamento dei ns affari in Roma. In pari tempo ho avvertito il Sig. Virgili ch’egli abbia a fare regolare consegna della Cassa e dell’Amministrazione nelle di Lei mani; Ella vorrà poi provvedere, valendosi del Sig.Bosatra, perché assumendo anche un personale straordinario, l’inventario venga ultimato per la data del 20 Aprile prossimo.

Per sostituire il Sig. Virgili avrei pensato appunto al Sig. Bosatra, che già fece buona pratica nel negozio di Milano e che conosce assai bene il nostro Catalogo: scrivo a lui per informarlo di tale mia deliberazione e per conoscere se, avendo egli famiglia, vuol trasportarsi in Roma. - Se il Sig. Bosatra non crederà di lasciare Milano, manderò altro impiegato adatto, sembrandomi necessario che alla succursale di Roma siavi un personale che abbia pratica speciale del nostro Catalogo.

Scriverò al Signor Emanuele Grandi nel senso ch’Ella desidera.

Faccia eseguire la voltura del contratto d’affitto coll’Amm[inistrazio]ne del Principe Odescalchi: quanto al prolungamento della locazione oltre il N[ove]mbre 1901 lascio Lei giudice se convenga o meno farlo ora; se non c’è pericolo d’aumento nella cifra di affitto possiamo attendere altra occasione pel prolungamento, ma come dico, veda Lei se, ottenendo il vantaggio dell’apertura di servizio, convenga prolungare sin d’ora il contratto di locazione.

La Casa Haas non aveva più metraggio sufficiente della stoffa scelta; sta fabbricandola appositamente, e credo che in breve tempo Le faremo spedizione della stoffa e della relativa frangia.

Ella si era gentilmente offerto di mettersi sin d’ora a mia disposizione: vede che approfitto dell’invito dandoLe parecchie missioni, una delle quali di ordine assai delicato: ma credo per tal modo di darLe una prova anticipata della mia fiducia nel di Lei tatto.

   I have received your letter of the 3rd of this month.

   I delayed responding because I was awaiting an answer from Sig. Virgili: depending on the nature of his response, I might have come to a different decision regarding the shop in Rome.

   I inform you that with a letter dated today I have let Sig. Virgili go from the post he has occupied up until now. I did so for various reasons, not last of which was to avoid leaving an unresolved conflict on your hands from the first day you took over as the manager of the shop, which would have caused a painful situation for both of you and be detrimental to the smooth operations of our commercial business in Rome. At the same time I informed Sig. Virgili that he must make formal consignment to you of the cash box and the administrative registers for which he was responsible; you will thereupon proceed, with the help of Sig. Bosatra and if necessary hiring temporary help, to finish the inventory by this coming 20 April.

   As a substitute for Sig. Virgili I have in mind the above-named Sig. Bosatra, who acquired useful experience in our Milan shop and knows our Catalog very well. I will write to him to inform him of my decision and to hear whether he wants to transfer to Rome, since he has a family. If Sig. Bosatra prefers to remain in Milan, I will send another suitable employee, since it seems necessary to me that the Rome shop have personnel that is familiar with our Catalog.

   I will write to Sig. Emanuele Grandi in the way in which you requested.

   Have the Administration of Prince Odescalchi perfect the lease on the shop: so far as the extension of it beyond November 1901 is concerned, I leave it up to you to decide whether or not that is convenient to do at this time. If there is no risk of a rent increase we can wait to extend the lease at a later date but, as I say, if you can obtain an advantage to the opening of the shop by prolonging the lease time straight away, then do so.

   The Casa Haas no longer had enough of the cloth we chose in stock; they are manufacturing a supply just for us and I think we should soon be able to send you the cloth and the relative fringe.

   You had kindly offered to be at my disposition immediately: as you can see I have taken advantage of that by assigning several tasks to you, one of which is quite delicate in nature. But in this way I believe I am giving you anticipated proof of my confidence in your diplomatic skills.

   As I look forward to hearing from you, please accept my best regards.
