Caro Tito.

Tito…. bada a te!.... tu ti incammini a cuor leggero verso l’abisso!

Intanto sospendo ogni viaggio – basta quelli fatti.

CLET002094

Milan, 5 July 1907

Dear Tito,

After the anguish you’ve put me through I had hoped to find a bit of peace of mind… but unfortunately, I see that I had fooled myself.

Having sought confirmation that you observed the instructions set out by our Board of Oversight for your recent trips, I learned instead that these instructions were completely ignored! My reaction was not one of surprise... but rather of  outrage. I have formally expressed my displeasure for the expenses that were undertaken without informing the General Manager! But now I must address you directly to say clearly that I do not intend to assume responsibility for these costs in any way, because there is no reason to do so! Travel paid for – a per diem of 50 lire – extraordinary expenses covered – all this is the kind of treatment afforded to a government minister. If you feel the need to travel like a prince, this is another matter and our administration will not cover for it.  Therefore I must reduce the expenses you’ve claimed to the levels that we established. We’ll mark the excess amount as your personal debt and perhaps suspend your monthly stipend until they are fully reimbursed. I already know what you’re likely to respond, but your response can have no effect on your father nor on the general manager, both of whom are too lenient with you. I have done everything humanly possible for you!!.. this is a fine retribution, indeed, and I will personally label myself a jackass of the first order. Your moral state, the state of your finances are absolutely frightening!! But the greater fear is reserved for me, your own father, both for my honor and for the name we carry, since I have come to realize there has been no change in you! You are completely oblivious to reality: you are audacious, carefree, exuberant, as if you had millions in your pocket, ready not only to reassure your creditors (and quite dubious ones, truth be told) but also to allow you to lead the life of a prince, of a billionaire! Your nonchalance is absolutely monumental. You have a vile promissory note coming due, of no less than 20,000 lire!! By god, how jolly of you!! l’è robba de rid [it is the stuff of comedy]. You arrive in Milan at just the right time, since you also need to report to us about important business deals…. But what do you do!!... your health has been so compromised that you feel the need to leave just a few hours later for Salso[maggiore Terme]!! And good night to those you’ve left behind!!... You needn’t have contrived such pap... by telling me you’d taken care of business before leaving anew!! Try fooling others with that line, but not me…. not to mention the fact that you haven’t given your detailed travel expense account to the Administration in accordance with established company norms!

Tito… watch out!... you are walking blithely toward the abyss!

Tito… watch out, and don’t make your father’s last years on this earth even more bitter with a comportment that is sheer madness, since only a madman would want to live like a millionaire… when these millions don’t exist.

You may perfectly well think that your talent is such that you ought to be compensated with hundreds of thousands of lire. That may be so, but you need to have that compensation in your pocket, not just in your imagination!!

I also believe, and perhaps not wrongly, that I’m not entirely stupid. I think that many of my friends and contemporaries were able to make millions whereas I did not, and I don’t find that fair! But I did not as a consequence gamble my money on the stock market, nor take on debts, nor promise to repay loans from friends, employees, and poets with a spate of IOUs!

I am astonished to witness your serene nonchalance, while you are pressed from all sides with enormous debts.

I had hoped to see a very different kind of comportment, but my hopes in that son whose many fine qualities promised to make him genuinely worthy of carrying on our family name, as the true pater familias of the future, have anymore vanished. This is the cruelest blow I have received in my entire life. But nothing has any effect upon you now, if not the mirage of making millions.

The American mirage suddenly appeared, and it might have seemed like a lifesaver to you, but I felt it was unreliable, fleeting! I fear it is truly a mirage, or at very least, very far off, therefore in no way an effective remedy for the present situation. Meantime the days pass, and I see your path becoming ever more bleak and perilous. This most recent phase, with the trips, was the last straw for me, especially after the heartfelt entreaties I made to you verbally so that you would not compromise my position as General Manager and as your Father. But even in this you proved not to give a damn: après moi, le déluge!

Well then, I do not want to assume these responsibilities! Two masters in one house cannot stand, just as they cannot in one Company. I have therefore resolved to assemble the shareholders to inform them that I, as the General Manager, have not been able to secure your respect, and that they must choose between us! I do not want the responsibility for other people’s actions anymore! No, by god, never, never, never again! I’d rather send everything to blazes.

Meantime I will suspend all your trips: those you have made shall suffice. When you become a billionaire you can travel with your own trains, perhaps killing off your father in the process, which will be a fine little game itself!
