Ella non può non essersi accorto com’io abbia da tempo e ripetute volte, espresso il mio malcontento pel poco ordine – e diciamo pure – pel disordine col quale sono tenute e la corrispondenza e le varie carte che sono a lei affidate per ragioni di ufficio.
Se talvolta, in seguito alle mie rimostranze, vi è una tal quale parvenza di ordine, questo è solamente superficiale, perché il complesso delle carte non corrisponde poi a quella precisione che è indispensabile in qualsiasi ufficio.
Io non metto menomamente in dubbio il di Lei buon volere, la di Lei deferenza verso la nostra Casa, ed è precisamente solo perchè apprezzo tali doti ed il di Lei carattere di gentiluomo, che non prendo una determinazione radicale, che pur dovrei adottare rigidamente osservando la mia qualità di Gerente la ditta.
Però è mio assoluto dovere rimediare agli inconvenienti su espressi ed impedire che altri, forse più gravi, si ripetano.
Quindi ho preso la determinazione di affidare il posto da Lei occupato, ad altra persona, pensando in pari tempo a ritenerlo, fino a nuovo avviso, tuttora facente parte degli impiegati della nostra Casa. E mentre vedrò quali altre attribuzioni potrò affidarle, Ella potrà intanto avviare la persona di cui sopra nelle varie incombenze aspettanti a codesto Ufficio.
In tale deliberazione Ella non deve vedere né un atto di sfiducia verso di Lei, sotto qualsiasi aspetto; anzi ho creduto in tal modo toglierlo da certe responsabilità in merito alle quali sino ad oggi non ho creduto opportuno di valutare, ma che potrebbero in avvenire crearle una posizione imbarazzante e per Lei e per me, mentre che desidero conservare, come persona, le migliori relazioni.
Sarà bene ch’Ella comunichi, in via confidenziale, al Sig.

You cannot have avoided noticing how I have, for some time now and repeatedly, expressed my displeasure over the lack of order – indeed, let’s say the outright disarray – in which the correspondence and the various office documents are kept, and which are entrusted to your care.
If, at times, following my complaints, there is some semblance of order, this is only superficial, because the totality of the paperwork has not been filed with the precision that is a requirement in any office.
I do not minimally question your good intentions, nor your deference towards the Company, and it is only because I appreciate these qualities as well as your character as a gentleman that I do not take radical measures, which indeed I should take in my role as General Manager of the Company.
Nonetheless, it is my absolute duty to remedy the shortcomings mentioned above in order to avoid that other, perhaps more serious, problems should occur.
I have therefore decided to assign to another person the position you currently occupy, while maintaining you as one of the employees of this Company, until further notice. In the meantime, as I consider what new tasks we may assign you, you can initiate the above-mentioned person to the various duties required by this Office.
You should not view this decision as an act of distrust toward you in any way. Indeed, I thought that in this manner I could relieve you of certain responsibilities in which I have not heretofore had occasion to evaluate your performance, but which could, in the future, create an embarrassing situation for both you and me, whereas I desire to preserve, on a personal level, the best relationship.
You would do well to communicate this, confidentially, to Sig. Emanuele Ricordi, in order to take whatever external measures are necessary so as to preserve your dignity.
