A norma del convenuto, la mia Ditta deve colla fine corrente, dichiarare la definitiva di Lei assunzione nel ruolo degli impiegati o meno.
Prima di addivenire ad una delle due deliberazioni, credo mio dovere farle conoscere alcune mie considerazioni. Premetto, a di Lei soddisfazione, ch’io non disconosco le buone qualità ch’Ella possiede, i modi distinti coi quali può degnamente rappresentare la Ditta stessa ed il vivo desiderio di giustificare la spesa non indifferente, e quasi direi gravosa, rappresentata dal di Lei stipendio e dalle spese di viaggio.
Ed appunto per questo, del resto giustificabile, suo desiderio, ne derivano in questo frattempo alcuni inconvenienti più o meno gravi, ma che in ogni modo non rispondono a quella linea di assoluta correttezza che vuole sempre seguire la Ditta.
Sorpassando sulla anticipazione di spese di viaggio, di cui già ebbi occasione di scriverle, Ella facilmente impegnò le Officine in stampe per le quali, se a Lei verbalmente potevano sembrare evidenti e chiare le fatturazioni, così, al fatto, non risultarono, arrivando persino alla intimazione di un processo in sede penale. Così pure, per un sentimento di amor proprio, Ella tenne corrispondenza diretta con terzi committenti, mentre ciò è contrario alle abitudini amministrative della Ditta e della Direzione delle Officine.
E’ bene che tutto ciò sia regolarmente istradato e che le tradizioni sieno mantenute quali io Le desidero.
Appunto per le buone qualità che sono in Lei da apprezzarsi, non voglio prendere ora una decisione, che a me e ad altri spiacerebbe moltissimo. Ma rigido osservatore di quelle discipline che reggono la nostra Amministrazione, credo, nel reciproco interesse, opportuno di proporle che il periodo provvisorio scadente col 31 Marzo 1905, sia protratto al 31 Dicembre 1905, come ed egualmente a quanto si è già convenuto.
In questo frattempo Ella avrà modo di meglio esplicare la di Lei attività in vantaggio della Ditta ed io sarò ben lieto di potere allora, con piena conoscenza di causa, confermarle che il periodo provvisorio è definitivamente finito.

In accordance with the agreement, my Company must, by the end of this month, declare whether or not you are to be hired in the role of employee.
Before reaching a decision, I believe it my duty to offer some considerations. Let me preface this by saying, and I think this will please you, that I recognize your good qualities and the distinguished manner with which you can represent this Company, and your sincere desire to justify the not indifferent, indeed almost burdensome, costs represented by your stipend and your travel expenses.
And it is precisely with regard to this desire of yours, which is entirely understandable, that certain drawbacks have in the meantime arisen which are more or less serious and which in any case do not correspond to that course of absolute propriety that this Company wishes always to follow.
If we overlook the question of the cash advances of travel expenses, about which I have already had occasion to write you, you cavalierly committed the Workshops to print jobs for which the invoicing, even if you thought that it seemed clear and obvious from your verbal discussions, turned out not to be so in fact, and indeed even led to the threat of a lawsuit. Further still, out of sheer vanity, you conducted personal correspondence with third-party customers, which is contrary to the policy of this Company and of the Office of the Director of the Workshops.
It would be opportune that all the above be brought back on track and that the established procedures be followed, as I expect.
Precisely because of the good qualities you have that are to be valued, I do not want to make a decision right now which, to me and to others, would be deeply displeasing. However, in strict observance of those norms that regulate our Administration I believe it opportune, to our reciprocal benefit, to propose that your trial period be extended from its current end date of 31 March 1905, to 31 December 1905, along the same terms previously agreed to.
Those extra months will give you the opportunity to perform your tasks to the advantage of the Company and at that time I will be pleased indeed, with full knowledge of the facts, to confirm that your trial period will have definitively ended.
