Prego scusarmi se le ordinarie e straordinarie occupazioni di questi giorni non mi permisero di rispondere prima alla sua del 7 corrente. E le dirò subito, coll’abituale franchezza, che, pur apprezzando in parte le ragioni da Lei esposte, la lettera stessa mi ha fatto penosa impressione. E ciò perché spira in essa un assieme di diffidenza verso la mia ditta che mi disgusta davvero anche perché in pressoché cinquant’anni dacché sono in questa amministrazione è la prima volta che mi vengono formulate richieste simili alle Sue. Comincio subito col respingere quelle riflettenti la formula della durata, ad un massimo di 3!! Per modo che il Gerente non può più aver fiducia nella stabilità del proprio personale – giacché allora dovrebbe essere garantito che, passati i tre anni, non vi saranno nuove pretese; infatti una limitazione di tempo vuol dire, a priori, un aumento! Ora ciò può farsi negli impieghi di Stato, in certi grandi Istituti d’indole quasi pubblica, nei quali vi sono i quinquenni d’aumento: ma vi è un limite massimo, vi sono paghe non laute, diminuite dalla tassa di ricchezza mobile: pel che è ragionevole un certo progressivo aumento, il quale è anche regolato dalla così detta pianta stabile del personale.
Questi sistemi non sono applicabili alle aziende private e non trovo affatto umiliante le richieste che si fanno al Gerente, il quale è, in fondo un pater familiae e nella sua equità giudica se, a norma delle sue facoltà finanziarie e del bene fondato della dimanda, questa sia più o meno accettabile. Ed è solo così che si mantengono fiduciosi ed amichevoli rapporti, dei quali, mi pare, la mia Casa dà molte, evidenti, luminose prove. Ma venirmi a dire: badate… per 3 anni, andiamo pure avanti, ma poi faremo allora i conti… questo non mi va, perché i conti mi piace di farli ma coll’oste.
Così pure, non sta il confronto colle filiali, le quali sono specie di corpi autonomi, perché non poche volte devono agire con piena responsabilità dei dirigenti, ai quali incombono impegni ben diversi da quelli che possono incontrare coloro che, più o meno, fanno parte della nostra Amministrazione Centrale. E’ bene che Lei sappia ch’io apprezzo quanto mai le di Lei prestazioni, sia per lo zelo, sia per l’intelligenza colle quali vengono disimpegnate: se fosse diversamente non mi sarai [sic] dato la pena di risponderle così a lungo.
E’ bene, altresì, ch’Ella sappia come io comprenda perfettamente i desideri individuali di migliorare la propria materiale posizione, e lo comprendo tanto più, quanto la persona ne è degna: ma vi sono criteri speciali che mi dettano una linea di condotta, dalla quale né voglio, né posso allontanarmi perché allora diverrei un cattivo amministratore!!...
Come già le dissi, ho risposto alla sua lettera esponendole francamente l’impressione provata: questa non vale però affatto a diminuire in qualsiasi modo la stima e la fiducia che ho verso di lei e che oggi le confermo

Please forgive me if the ordinary and extraordinary workload of recent days delayed my response to your letter of the 7th of this month. And let me say straight off, with my usual frankness, that – while I can appreciate some of the arguments you raise – overall your letter made a very poor impression on me. This, because there transpires from the letter a distrust towards my company that truly disgusts me, and because in the circa fifty years that I have been in this administration this is the first time I have received requests like yours. I will begin by immediately refusing those requests regarding an end date for the duration of the contract, at a maximum of 3 years!! That would mean that the General Manager could no longer count on the stability of his work force, since in that case he should have the assurance that, after three years, there would not be new requests. In fact, a limited term would mean, a priori, a request for a raise! Now, that can happen in Government employment or in certain large institutions that seem almost semi-governmental, in which they foresee raises every five years. But in those cases there is an upper limit to the raises, the pay levels are not generous to begin with, and they are diminished by the income tax. From which, a gradual increase in pay is reasonable because it is offset by the advantage of the permanence of the work force.
These procedures are not applicable to private companies, and I do not at all find the requests made to the General Manager to be humiliating. He is, after all, a sort of pater familias who, with a sense of fairness, will judge whether such requests are more or less acceptable, taking into account the company’s financial situation and the reasonableness of the request. Only in this way can a rapport of trust and friendship be maintained, and of which my company has provided many clear and exceptional examples. But for you to come and tell me “Make note, let’s go ahead for 3 years, but then we’ll take stock of the situation”, sorry, I don’t find that acceptable, because I don’t like counting chicks before they are hatched.
By the same token, your comparison with the affiliates is not relevant. Those are independent entities of sorts, whose respective managers are often fully accountable for their operation, with tasks and committments that are quite different from those who are more or less part of our Central Administration. You should know that I appreciate the work you do for us, both in terms of your enthusiasm and for the intelligent manner in which you carry out your job. Were that not the case, I would not have taken the trouble of providing such a lengthy response.
You should also know that I perfectly well understand one’s personal aspirations to improve his financial situation, and I appreciate that fact all the more, the more a person is worthy of consideration. But I must also hew to the criteria imposed on me by company policy that I neither can nor wish to override, because in doing so I would be a poor administrator!!...
As I said above, I responded to your letter by laying out the frank impression I got from it; however, this in no way diminishes the respect and trust I have in you, and which I hereby confirm.
