Ella ha voluto dare peso eccessivo a quel mio giudizio che si esprimeva colle parole: forse poca voce. Prima di tutto c’è il forse che è dubitativo e che significa che la di lei voce in teatro, benché di non gran volume, può benissimo espandersi e riuscire a raggiungere gli uditori - al di là dell’orchestra. Ma più che tutto io ho voluto osservare che il di lei modo di cantare - per quanto eccellente - non è tale ancora da rendersi molto efficace in un’opera lirica - è questione di esperienza e dalla piccola prova fatta pochi giorni fa colla “

Dear Signorina,
You are giving entirely too much weight to the supposed implications of my opinion, which I expressed with the words: perhaps too little voice. First of all there's the perhaps, which implies doubt and means that in the theatre your voice, while not particularly powerful, might easily expand to reach the audience — on the other side of the orchestra. But my main intention was to observe that your way of singing — while certainly excellent — does not yet provide the most effective means of projection in a lyric opera. It's a question of experience, and from your short audition with "Traviata" I have good reason to believe you will be able to sing as a stage artist must — without forcing your voice, be it understood, but rather by imbuing it with the intensity and expressivity that are required in the theatre.
With these words I hope to have restored your faith in yourself, which you need for success — and which is just what I hope you will attain.
I am returning the letter my poor father wrote to you, along with a few letters of recommendation for some of our best theatrical agents.
