Caro Maestro,

        Ho ricevuto da Illica la trama del poema “Italia” di cui le avevo fatto parola – nello svolgimento del libretto Illica ha già scelto a collaboratore Renato Simoni, col quale avrò un colloquio domani per conoscere le sue idee così come già conosco quelle di Illica. Potrò dunque, dopo questa intervista, darle ogni dettaglio del come sarà il libretto definitivo che io credo le dovrebbe piacere. Ma siccome né a Illica, né a Simoni io non ho fatto il di lei nome, così vorrei che ci vedessimo noi due – ella potrebbe leggere la tela  ed io le darei tutti quei ragguagli necessari a chiarire meglio quello che sarà – ad opera finita – questo poema italico. Mi faccia dunque sapere se e quando ha intenzione di venire a Milano ed io mi metterò a di lei disposizione.

Coll’augurio di avere finalmente trovato un soggetto che sia di suo gradimento le stringo cordialmente la mano e mi ripeto

Dear Maestro,

   Illica has given me his continuity draft of "Italia", the poem I had told you about — and for the libretto Illica has already chosen Renato Simoni as his collaborator, with whom I will meet tomorrow to hear his ideas relative to those of Illica. After this encounter I will then be able to provide you with a completely detailed prospectus of the definitive libretto, which I believe you will like. But since I did not mention your name to either Illica or Simoni, I think it would be a good idea for just the two of us to get together — you could read the draft and I could fill you in with everything you need to better understand what this "Italian" poem will become when it is finished. Let me know then if and when you intend to come to Milan, and I will make myself available for you at your convenience.

   With the hope of having finally found a subject to your liking, I extend a cordial handshake and remain as always
