Mi permetta di esternarle la mia sorpresa per la richiesta, che io ritengo esorbitante fattami colla prg di lei lettera in data di ieri. Se Ella crede di accettare la somma di £ 400 – pel progetto di impianto ed esercizio di una “Fabbrica di granate calibro di “m/m 75” io mi impegno a versarle altre £ 600 – qual’ora l’impianto si effettui realmente – tanto più che dalle nostre due interviste non è resultato affatto che si possano trovare disponibili, in tempo opportuno, le macchine occorrenti. Ora Ella capirà che data l’incertezza su questo punto capitale di tutto l’affare, io non credo di dovermi esporre a sborsare inutilmente una cifra non indifferente.
Mi auguro che Ella accetti la mia proposta – nel caso contrario, chiedendole scusa pel disturbo arrecatole, mi voglia far sapere quanto le debbo per le due interviste ed io soddisferò al mio debito.

I must be allowed to confess my surprise at the request you made in your letter of yesterday, which I consider exorbitant. If you find you can accept the sum of £400 for the construction and operation of a "Facility for the production of 75 mm caliber cannon shells," I will agree to pay you an additional £600 in the event it is effectively realized — especially since from our two encounters it would appear the necessary machines may not be found in a timely manner. Now, given the uncertainty regarding this fundamental point of the entire affair, you will understand that I do not believe I should be expected to risk the useless disbursement of so considerable a figure.
I hope that you will accept my proposal — should it be otherwise, I beg your forgiveness for the disturbance I have caused you and ask that you let me know what I owe you for the two encounters, so that I may settle my debt.
