Please do not believe, dear Commendatore, that my silence means I have been remiss in attempting to secure additional American capital for the new Banca di Sconto. I had written some time ago to my friend Otto Kahn of the firm Kuhn, Loeb & Co. of New York, describing the current conditions and tremendous future potential of American commerce in Italy, and offering him an investment opportunity in conjunction with a very important Italian Institute of Credit interested in encouraging the inevitable growth of commercial exchange between our country and the United States. The response has finally come, and unfortunately it is negative; but a letter I had received from the Director of my Company in New York, to whom I had sent the letter for Mr. Kahn, already led me to suspect that, given the absolutely tumultuous political and financial climate of that country, there was little hope for my request, at least for the time being.
I respectfully enclose a copy of the letter from Kuhn, Loeb & Co., and the part of the one from Mr. Maxwell where he describes in no uncertain terms the present state of affairs in America.
Should you believe that my presence and my experience might be of some assistance to you in pursuing this matter or another of your concern, I will always be happy to place myself at your disposal. Meanwhile, please accept my highest regards and believe me
yours most sincerely
