Perdona se vengo a turbare la pace delle tue vacanze per parlarti di un affare pel quale chiederei il tuo ausilio finanziario e cercherò di esser breve.
Scoppiata la nostra guerra e diminuito purtroppo di molto il lavoro nelle nostre officine, ho pensato subito se una parte del nostro stabile ed anche una parte della nostra maestranza, non potesse servire a qualche cosa di utile per le officine stesse, trasformando le nostre lavorazioni in altre che servissero ai bisogni della guerra – ma aihmé! la carta imbrattata non è utile né ai combattenti, né ai feriti. E allora affrontai il problema della fabbricazione delle munizioni per la nostra artiglieria: modestia a parte, credo di essere stato uno dei primi – quando non si pensava a Comitati per le munizioni o a Cooperative per la loro produzione – ad ingolfarmi nello studio tecnico e finanziario di questa fabbricazione.
Sorvolo sui dettagli di questo lavoro preparatorio, oggi il mio progetto concreto è sorretto dal parere di valenti ingegneri specialisti, e i resultati finanziari se il progetto si effettuerà, non potranno scostarsi di troppo da quelli da me preventivati – e che debbono dare una eccellente remunerazione al capitale.

Dear Aunt Anna,
Forgive me if I allow myself to trouble the tranquility of your vacation to speak of an affair for which I would ask your financial assistance, and I will attempt to be brief.
With the outbreak of this war of ours and the unfortunate, substantial decline of activity in our workshops, I immediately began to ponder whether a part of our physical plant and also some of our employees might be dedicated to some other useful purpose for the workshops themselves, transforming our production into something that would be helpful to the war effort — but alas! ink-stained paper is of no use to the soldiers, nor to the wounded. So then I turned to the problem of supplying ammunition for our artillery: modesty aside, I believe I was among the first — before any Munitions committees or Cooperatives for their manufacture had been contemplated — to immerse myself in studying the technical and financial aspects of their production.
Details of this preparatory work aside, I now have a concrete project supported by the opinion of respected engineers in the field, and the financial results if the project is realized should not vary much from my estimates — which would provide an excellent return on capital.
The necessary capital would be 600,000 lire — but 400,000 will be sufficient because the Banca Zaccaria Pisa, to whom I presented my figures, is disposed to open a line of credit for 200,000 lire. Structure of the Company: simple limited partnership under my General Management and a supervisory board. Duration: two years, with the hope that by then the war will have ended and with it the production of deadly weapons.
I could provide you with more details that you would perhaps only find tiring — but I am always ready to give them to you or to someone you trust to examine my documents.
If you have the available funds, I believe I can safely advise you that investing whatever you find opportune in this new undertaking with me at the helm is a good business affair, and also a valuable gesture for our country. The new responsibilities that I would assume will certainly not divert my attention from defending the interests of our Company's Shareholders, which I hold in high regard, because I have already enlisted the collaboration of a technical specialist.
Should you grant my request, it will be further proof of your generosity toward me, and of the trust you have always had in me as a businessman.
