PARIS
My dear friend,
I am expecting a visit today from Luchaire, who will explain why the inauguration of the Hospital must be postponed to early next January. As I had already informed you by wire, the Hospital will be ready for use around 10 or 12 December, and given that the need to treat the newly wounded grows every more urgent with every passing day, we will open the Hospital in any case, ready to set the official inauguration date when it is most convenient for Mr. Barthou and your Committee.
The surgical instruments that should have arrived Saturday have not yet been consigned; I hope to have an explanation for this from Luchaire. But what dismays me more is that, even though I had provided Luchaire with all the necessary information in my letter dated this past 25 September, the Gallot Company only recently received the order for the X-ray machine (!!), sending me a wire three days ago requesting details concerning the appropriate electric current for the machine, and informing me that it will only be ready around 12 December — which means that the Hospital will have to function for God knows how long without this machine, which is essential to have before attempting any surgical operation whatsoever. Please try to recuperate the time that was lost, my dear friend, and exert your utmost pressure on the Gallot Company to be quick and thorough —it would be a genuine shame if, notwithstanding your generous offer, our brave soldiers were to suffer because of this deplorable delay.
When you come to visit the Hospital, you will be surprised to see the transformation of my production facilities and how well the supplemental work was done, some of it at my Company's own expense. Everything is impressive, spacious and full of light — the beds are solid, the covers magnificent: in short, the Hospital of the French Cities will be, just as I promised you, the most beautiful Hospital in Milan.
The Visiting Ladies Committee is ready; the Italian Ladies are my aunt Anna Erba, my cousin Countess Carla Visconti di Modrone, my sister-in-law Carla Ricordi, and Signora Esterlo (wife of the Senator) — the French Ladies are Madame Gruss (daughter of General Gallieni), Madame Chapelle, Madame Casaza, and the wife of the representative of P.L.M. in Milan, whose name I have forgotten.
Following her visit with me on her way through Milan to observe the work on the Hospital, Réjane sent me 500 francs for flowers to be arranged everywhere in her name on the day the first wounded arrive in the Hospital of the French Cities.
This news is only for you, at least for now; when the Hospital is fully functioning, you can share it with the press if you like.
I saw Pogliani after he returned from Paris; he seemed anything but pleased, despite his visit with Mr. Ribot, and I had the impression he must have ecountered a rather cold reception. What tidings do you have from the world of finance?
I await your news, remaining as always
yours warmly

Monsieur Camille Cerf
PARIGI
Caro amico,
Mi dia sue notizie e mi creda sempre
suo aff.mo
