Ricevo la sua lettera in data del 19 corr. che mi reca la più sgradita delle sorprese. Prima di risponderle ho voluto interpellare i signori fratelli Sesti i quali mi hanno mostrato copia delle lettere in data di ieri e di oggi. Non aggiungo dal canto mio parola alcuna, ma le dichiaro apertamente che in nessun modo intendo più che il mio nome sia immischiato in questo affare del caoutchouc Mousse, e ciò perché in tutta la mia esistenza ho dato il mio nome e la mia attività solo per affari precisi e chiari, mentre invece in codesto vedo sorgere delle nubi e dei grovigli, che io non mi perito di giudicare, ma che mi consigliano di astenermi in modo assoluto dall’occuparmene.
Per posta, a parte, le faccio spedire quattro copie del memoriale

Dear Counselor,
I received your letter of this past 19th containing the most unpleasant of surprises. Before responding I wanted to speak with the Sesti brothers, who showed me copies of the letters dated yesterday and today. As far as I'm concerned I haven't a single word to add, but I will tell you openly that in no way will I allow my name to be mixed up with this caoutchouc Mousse affair, because throughout my entire life I have only been personally associated and actively involved with precise and transparent business matters, while here instead things are muddled and obscure, which may not be within my purview to judge but which nonetheless suggest that I absolutely keep as far away from them as possible.
I am mailing you separately four copies of the Gravenhoff report; since I must depart this very evening, please be so kind as to send a copy of said report to the Prince of Sirignano.
I had written you from Paris asking that you go speak on my behalf with Hon. Marquis Medici del Vascello = I've heard nothing further = why? Please do me the favor of looking him up and giving him the Gravenhoff report and the two Charters in my stead, explaining clearly the seriousness of the affair and insisting that he take part.
