Sig. Luigi Illica

Cassano d’Adda

It was impossible for me to answer your letter from the other day right away – and perhaps it was for the best, since that way I had the opportunity to calm my over-excited nerves after that eruption of volcanic detritus, which you say is your last – and I certainly hope so! – because the ground eventually becomes sterile from so much detritus, and only centuries later does it recuperate sufficient humus to become productive again! – But you full well know that in our case we haven’t centuries to wait! – at least I have little inclination to do so.

Reserving the right to respond later with regard to Adolphe, Benjamin, Jacques, Louis, Humbert, etc. etc., with a complete calendar if needed, I would like to immediately address the famous two things that had been stuck in your craw for such a long time without your coughing them up – which was bad, very bad, since keeping back such muck risks blocking your throat with a goiter as big as a watermelon!

In all this, however, there would be reason to laugh, if the situation had not assumed such a disagreeable aspect, which is to say only that you could have believed the two things in question were true, thereby choosing to totally ignore my personal standards of conduct and those of my family, as well as every principle of correct administration practiced by me and my company!! –

If then any of us might have been inclined to lament a long litany of issues with you, it would have been done privately within the family without the presence of Sig. and Sig.ra Mascagni, which otherwise would not only have compromised our aforesaid standards of conduct but also have been entirely too stupid an act for any of us to have committed – call us what you like, but I hardly think we are imbeciles. Actually, with an added touch of more flavorful language, that label could well be applied ..... to others! –

As for Giacosa, I don’t even understand what you are alluding to!! – and I’ll say no more.

But the detritus doesn’t end there, as I am sorry to deduce from what you added regarding those ideas which, as you point out, not everyone may profess to have, or even if they did have them that they were good! – Here too I am stricken with an overwhelming thought that frightens me for the sake of peace in the days to come! – since, if your observation is to be taken literally, you would become as infallible as the pope, and not finding some of your ideas good.... would be nothing less than a casus belli [declaration of war]!!  and so we begin again with those useless, sterile, inconclusive battles that ultimately come to nothing if not to make everyone, even fools, laugh behind our backs!! –

And what should I say to Luigi Illica, if I too have had things stuck in my craw, certain more or less public outbursts made in moments of unjustified anger against me, against the Company, against my family and our employees?.... I paid no attention!! – because, weathered and worn as I am, I know how the world works, and I know that defects of nervousness, irritability, and hyper-sensitivity neither obscure nor destroy the intelligent and honorable qualities of the man – which have become so rare anymore that when one encounters them they should be met with a bow. That’s why, despite your petty complaints, silences, disappearances, and sulking, I have always preserved sentiments of sincere friendship, not to mention respect for you!... even when I did not find your ideas to my taste – and because I always support my words with deeds, I will tell you that I was not convinced of the theatrical efficacy of either La colonia libera or Medio Evo latino as libretti, be it understood, for the realm of music.

Should you therefore be offended?... but then no more discussion is possible, and we’ve come back round to that infallibility I spoke of earlier!

No, dear Illica!... keep the volcano active, for your work and your collaboration with others – not just a crater serving as a funnel for petty nonsense, malicious rumours, slander!... And then?... what usefulness comes from it?... none, not even this letter, which I was forced to write, but which is perfectly useless because there should never have been any reason to write it, and because it ate up my time which would have been better spent talking about Adolphe and many other things!

All this seems to be a sign of the times... worse than those of the Borgias!! Just look at our beloved Parliament!!... we imitate it with idle chatter about things that are not only useless but downright corrosive!...

Laboremus [let’s get to work] – and with my most cordial greetings to you and your wife, I remain

Yours most sincerely,

Giulio Ricordi
