Caris. Arrigo.

l'Affmo tuo

Dearest Arrigo,

I know I am about to say things that are not only bothersome but even irritating; yet friends, who are granted impunity, may allow themselves to be bothersome and irritating!!...

Need I reassure you what affectionate regard I have for you, not only because I admire Arrigo Boito, but because I have admired the remarkably upstanding qualities of the man I have known these many years?.... No, absolutely not – which therefore gives me the courage to speak of Nerone.

One emotional experience which I hold particularly dear was when you read me your stupendous libretto. I recall that you then wrote to me: we will return to discuss it in July, that is, 5 months from now –  and we will indeed do so, but I want to return to it again today.

The many considerations that might be made regarding how absolutely opportune it would be for you to complete the music this year are truly superfluous with a man like you. It is true that it is easy to simply say: finish; but this is hardly such a cut and dried issue! Nevertheless…. if you want to, you very much want to, your imagination cannot possibly fail you, both happily and handsomely so. In any case, I believe the moment has come to think of all of the important preparatory work your Nerone requires, because it would be too painful if you, like Nannetta, were to say: Eccomi quà!... [Here I am! (actually “Eccola qua!”: Falstaff, Act 3)] only to find that the singers were unavailable, or that the staging had to be hastily arranged! You have observed yourself that Verdi waited too long for Falstaff!.. and while I speak from a far more modest position, I would dare direct that same identical observation against you!....

Tell me to go to the devil…. fight back if you want, but hear me out.

You could just as easily say that I have little concern for the fact that I am poking my nose into business that is not mine, but…. may I or may I not hope to have the honor and the pleasure of claiming your Nerone as one of the operas in my Company’s catalogue?

Qui tollis [Ye who taketh away]…. or rather, che tolla! [what nerve!]… but I certainly hope so, indeed

“ne sono sicuro, sicuro, sicuro” [“Ne sono sicuro! Sicuro! Sicuro!” /“I am certain of it! Certain! Certain!”: Ford in Falstaff, Act 2].

Having gone this far, I have nothing left but to put an end to it here, begging you to forgive me for this letter, and even if it is bothersome, so thoroughly bothersome, to accept this salutation which comes whole-heartedly from

                                                                                                                                Yours most fondly,
