Dio, il Cielo, la Provvidenza divina ce la mandino buona….. in quanto che temo che la tragedia Pucciniana si sviluppi sempre più - ed è impossibile che un uomo, fabbricandosi di propria mano la sua ruina fisica e morale, sia in grado di comporre!!... Dearest Illica,
In response to your letter of yesterday. I still have not received Giacosa’s letter for Mascagni!!... but this does not surprise me: I’ll wait 8, 10, 15 days, and when it comes it comes. Meanwhile you did very well to write to Mascagni, as will I.
I’m fine with everything you write regarding your work. It’s a pity you and your wife will not be coming here!... but if in the end you feel that will disturb the other woman, Sig.ra Butterfly, then so be it!
As long as.... God, Heaven, Divine Providence see fit to smile upon us..... since I fear that the Puccinian tragedy grows ever more dreadful – and it is impossible that a man who would bring about his own physical and moral ruin is in any condition to compose!!... I tell you this out of genuine distress, with the utmost sorrow! – but in his current condition, I don’t believe Puccini possesses the intellectual vitality he needs to generate work.
In any case, laboremus [let’s get to work] you and I.
I need from you:
1. The 1st scene description for Butterfly.
2. The description of the scene when the curtain rises for the 1st Act of Germania. Would you perhaps prefer to have the proof sheets for the set design?......
