Ti ringrazio assai del tuo telegramma: abbiamo veramente sentito con dolore la perdita del povero Lisei , il quale aveva veramente la preziosa qualità di essere sinceramente affezionato alla nostra Casa, e di vantare una onestà a tutta prova: il che, ai tempi che corrono, sono doti abbastanza rare, per non sentirne la mancanza. E non è poco, a così grande distanza, fuori d’ogni sorveglianza diretta, il potere almeno riposare con fiducia nella illibatezza della persona cui sono affidati così gravi interessi.

Il che, al vivissimo dispiacere della perdita d’ottima persona, si aggiunge ora la preoccupazione di surrogarla degnamente. Ad un buono e fidato amico come tu sei, e che in mezzo al vortice della vita artistica, sai pure essere uomo serio ed avveduto, mi rivolgo ora in via confidenziale, per domandarti consiglio.

L’ottimo nostro Bossetti ha tutte le buone qualità dell’impiegato, ma certo non ha quella fondamentale educazione per rappresentare degnamente costì la nostra Casa: e pur apprezzando le doti del nostro compianto Lisei, mancava a lui pure quel non so che per formare esteriormente il gentleman che è desiderato dal pubblico inglese.

Ora io non ho qui sottomano il personale adatto: conto eccellenti impiegati, nei quali potrei certo avere completa fiducia, ma nessuno d’essi ha le qualità volute per essere degno nostro rappresentante in Londra . D’altra parte, un po’ per ripugnanza, un po’ perché la non conoscenza ispira sfiducia, mi spiacerebbe rivolgermi ad un inglese: e capirai di quale somma importanza sia il dare rappresentanza e procura a persona nuova per la Casa!!...

Come vedi è fatto gravissimo; e ti prego darmi novella prova di amicizia, trovando in mezzo alle molte tue occupazioni, il modo di pensare seriamente a ciò, e di scrivermene in proposito: te ne sarò gratissimo.

Aspetto pure risposta ad un’ultima mia, come altresì ti prego rivedere e rimandare subito le bozze di stampa, mano mano che le riceverai.

Speriamo e desideriamo vederti presto, ed intanto affettuosamente come sempre, mi ripeto

Dearest Tosti ,

Many thanks for your telegram. We were quite saddened to learn of the death of poor Lisei , who nurtured a truly laudable and absolutely sincere affection for our Company, and whose honesty was beyond question – qualities entirely too rare these days not to be sorely missed. And it is no small matter, from such distance and without direct supervision, to be able to trust the upstanding character of the person entrusted with matters that are so important to us.

In addition to the sorrowful loss of an excellent individual, I must now concern myself with finding a suitable replacement for him. It is to you, good and trusted friend that you are, and one who maintains a serious and judicious perspective amidst the maelstrom of artistic life, that I now turn for confidential advice.

Our good Bossetti has all of the commendable attributes of an employee, but he decidedly lacks the fundamental education needed to represent our Company there in a dignified manner; and while our dearly departed Lisei had many fine qualities, he too was wanting of that je ne sais quoi which gives one the proper appearance of a gentleman in the eyes of the English public.

Here there are no appropriate personnel at hand: I have a number of excellent employees in whom I could certainly place my complete trust, but none of them has the necessary qualities to be a worthy representative for us in London . On the other hand, whether for a touch of antipathy or because my limited acquaintance makes me somewhat wary, I would not care to turn to an Englishman; and you can understand how terribly important the decision is to grant the representation and procuratorship for the Company to a new person!!...

As you see, this is a critical situation; and in the name of our friendship I beg you to find a way, despite your many activities, to give this serious thought and to write me, for which I will be infinitely grateful.

I also await your response to a recent letter of mine, and I ask that you review and immediately return the proofs [of your music] bit by bit as you receive them.

We very much hope to see you soon, and meanwhile my warmest regards as always.
