Avvicinandosi la famosa serata di San Stefano , bisogna ora pensare seriamente ed efficacemente ad assicurare il successo dell’Asrael Io ho già fatto e provveduto a qualche cosa, ed infatti avrà visto che la stampa ha assunto aspetto benevolo e neutrale. Ma….. è forza dirlo, ed arrossisco nel dirlo! si aspetta la polpetta dal Maestro Barone e milionario !... altrimenti si tireranno delle cannonate. Ề una cosa umiliante pel povero Maestro ! ed è bene ch’esso non lo sappia. Io ebbi già formale ed espressa autorizzazione dall’Ill^mo Barone Raimondo di provvedere come più avrei stimato opportuno: ma è cosa delicata assai…. e desidero ch’Ella ne parli subito al Sigr. Barone stesso , perché dietro sua conferma si agisca subito nelll’intento di assicurare il successo.

Conoscendo con chi ho a che fare vorrei non dare in una volta sola una regalia: ma fissata una cifra, avvertire che si dovranno scrivere due, tre, articoli, che di volta in volta saranno compensati.

Secondo l’uso, il maestro fa anche una regalia alle masse corali, macchinisti etc. addetti al Teatro : desidero sapere se devo disporre anche per ciò, per incarico del Sig Barone Raimondo , o se ciò spetterà al Sig. Barone Alberto .

Certi critici calzano alte pretese….. sapendolo da mie esatte informazioni….. adducendo….. certe esigenze che è meglio neppure dire.

Sarà anche necessario dare qualche posto alle prime 3 rapp.ⁱ: in parte ciò mi riguarda, per quello che ho l’abitudine di fare, ma bisognerebbe che il Signor Barone Raimondo provvedesse un po’ anche a questo.

Tutto sommato, credo si dovranno spendere circa 5000 lire: se sarà possibile meno, tanto meglio, e curerò di non scialacquare inutilmente.

Favorisca dunque parlarne subito al Sig^r Barone in tutta segretezza, in modo che nessun’altri fuori di noi tre ne sappia verbo!...altrimenti si farebbe un danno. Mi basterà che il Signor Barone mi telegrafi: Sta bene. Approvo ed autorizzo, che così subito mi metterò all’opera, non essendovi neppure un giorno da perdere.

Intanto la prego di presentare i miei ossequi al Sig^rBarone , assicurarlo che le prove sono bene incamminate, e che faccio i più caldi voti pel completo successo di un così bel lavoro.

With the celebrated evening of San Stefano soon upon us, it is time to think seriously and efficaciously about ensuring the success of Asrael . I have already done and arranged a few things, and in fact you will have noticed that the press has maintained a benevolent and neutral stance. But..... this must be said, though I blush to do so! – some payoff is expected from Maestro Barone , the millionaire! – otherwise a fusillade of cannon shot is assured. It is humiliating for the poor Maestro ! and it would be better were he not to know. I already had the express and formal authorization from the Ill.mo Barone Raimondo to make whatever arrangements I found most opportune; but it is an extremely delicate matter.... and I prefer that you speak directly with Sig. Barone right away to ask for confirmation, so that immediate action can be taken to ensure success.

Knowing the individuals involved as I do, I would not want to give a gratuity as a lump sum but rather, once a figure is established, to make it clear that they must write two or three articles for which compensation will be supplied each time.

It is also customary for the maestro to provide a gratuity for the chorus members, machinists, etc. working for the Theatre . I need to know if I must do this as well in behalf of Sig. Barone Raimondo , or if the task will fall instead to Sig. Barone Alberto .

Certain critics make outrageous demands.... as I know from reliable information.... advancing.... certain “exigencies” that are better left unsaid.

It will also be necessary to set some seats aside for the first 3 performances; I will take care of part of this, as it is my habit to do so, but Signor Barone Raimondo should also make provisions for some as well.

When all is said and done, I believe the total expenditure will be around 5000 lire; if less is possible, so much the better, and I will make sure that nothing is frittered away uselessly.

Be so kind then as to speak immediately to Sig. Barone in absolute secrecy, so that no one but the three of us knows a word of this!... otherwise it would be damaging. Signor Barone need only telegraph me: Agreed. I approve and authorize, and I will get to work right away, since we have no time to waste.

Please give my compliments to Sig. Barone , assuring him that the rehearsals are moving along well, and that I most fervently hope for the complete success of such a beautiful work.
