Ritengo perciò un vero delitto il lasciar decadere questo grande teatro, tanto sotto il punto di vista dell’arte, quanto sotto quello utilitario, pel grande movimento commerciale che porta nella nostra città. Sarà una vera fortuna se grazie alla di Lei interrogazione, non si lascierà [sic] dormire come per l’addietro una quistione di tanta importanza: Ella si dice ignorante in materia….. non lo credo. L’arte è cosa tutta spirituale; chi la sente, l’ama, chi l’ama è in grado di giudicarla assai meglio dei così detti intellettuali, e di quei dotti, che colla pedanteria uccidono la fantasia ed il cuore. Fra le arti poi, la musica è quella che parla misteriosamente alle masse. Sono tutti ferri vecchi della critica le fandonie della iniziazione artistica!...data musica buona, esecuzione buona, ed un pubblico imparziale, sia pure composto tutto di ignoranti, si avrà il migliore ed il più intelligente dei giudizi. Ben vengano dunque gli ignoranti, quando amano l’Arte - ed io mi felicito con Lei, egregio Signore, di far parte di questa schiera, che è poi l’umanità tutta: e l’Arte deve parlare e vivere per l’umanità, e più grande sarà l’amore di un popolo per l’arte, e più gentile ne sarà il cuore - e più sveglia la mente.

Art is something entirely spiritual in nature; those who feel it love it, and those who love it are far more capable of evaluating it than those so-called intellectuals and eggheads who destroy the imagination and the heart with their pedantry. Among the arts then, it is music that speaks mysteriously to the masses. All that nonsense about initiation into the arts is nothing but a rusty old weapon of the critics.!... if the music is good, the performance good, and the public impartial, be it even uneducated, the best and most intelligent judgments are sure to be had. The ignorant are more than welcome, then, when they love Art – and I am happy to take my place beside you, egregio Signore, as part of this multitude, which is nothing less than all of humanity. Art must speak and live for humanity, and the greater the love of a people for art, the more gentle the heart will be – and the more alert the mind.
