Ho ricevuto la sua lettera, controfirmata da suoi compagni, alla quale mi affretto rispondere. Ricevo sempre volontieri le richieste degli addetti al nostro Stabilimento, ma avrei desiderato, per buona regola, che la predetta lettera mi fosse pervenuta a mezzo della Direzione delle Officine = alla quale è dovere rivolgersi per la prima.
Certamente spiace più a me, che a loro, di dare lavoro fuori dallo Stabilimento: ma vi sono circostanze speciali che talvolta mi obbligano di farlo.
E’ bene intanto far loro sapere che le condizioni generali dei commerci e delle industrie sono molto cattive in tutto il mondo: ed il commercio musicale, che ha bisogno di quiete e prosperità pubblica, è il primo a risentirsene: non è in mio potere di lottare contro questo generale mal’essere degli affari, perciò dovendo mio malgrado, diminuire un poco le spese, piuttosto che licenziare un numero sensibile di lavoranti, ho preferito ridurre di un [sic] ora l’orario.
So che la Sezione tipografia è abbastanza carica di lavoro, ma se io rimetto le 10 ore per questa sezione, commetto una vera ingiustizia verso le altre - per cui sarei obbligato a ristabilire il solito orario per tutti, il che ora non mi è possibile di fare.
Il lavoro che si dà fuori è quello urgente ed imprevisto, e non l’ordinario o di riguardo: e mi spiace poi anche a dover dire che questo lavoro dato ad altre tipografie finisce col costarmi meno, che non quello fatto coi mezzi propri dello stabilimento!!... Perciò se dovessi soltanto aver riguardo all’interesse, mi converrebbe far eseguire tutto il lavoro di tipografia fuori!... e non lo faccio, per mantenere complete tutte le sezioni che formano lo Stabilimento.
Mi stanno sempre a cuore le condizioni di tutti gli addetti alle nostre Officine, perciò appena, appena mi sarà possibile ristabilire l’orario solito, lo farò col più gran piacere, giacchè io vorrei mi fosse permesso far guadagnare ai lavoranti volonterosi, il più che sia fattibile, in proporzione alle risorse offerte dal commercio.

Having received your letter countersigned by your colleagues, I wish to respond without delay. While I am always happy to receive requests from the employees of our Plant, I would have preferred as a matter of standard procedure that the aforementioned letter had been forwarded to me from the Direction of the Workshops, to which one should always turn first.
Certainly I am more unhappy than they are to have to send work outside the Plant, but there are special circumstances that sometimes force me to do so.
Meanwhile it would be well to inform them that the general conditions of commerce and industry are very poor the world over, and that the music business, which needs a tranquil and prosperous public, is the first to feel the effect. Since it is not within my power to fight against this generally unhealthy state of affairs, I must reluctantly reduce expenses to some small degree, and rather than dismiss a goodly number of workers, I preferred to shorten the workday by one hour.
I know that the Typography Department is fairly full of work, but if I reinstate the 10-hour day for this department I commit an act of genuine injustice toward the others – consequently I would be forced to return to the usual schedule for everyone, which at this time is not possible for me to do.
The work that is sent out to be done is urgent and unforeseen, not ordinary jobs or those requiring special attention; and I am even more sorry to have to say that this work given to other typographers ends up costing me less that it would using the resources of our own plant!!... Therefore, if I were only to look after my own interests it would be more convenient for me to send all typesetting work out to be done!... but I do not do that in order to keep all of the departments of the Plant intact.
I always have the conditions of all those employed in our Workshops at heart, which means that just as soon as I am able to return to the usual workday schedule I will do so with great pleasure, since I would like to be able to give those workers who are diligent the opportunity to earn as much as they can in proportion to the economic resources of the business itself.
